Abstract

The ensemble of regular Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes introduced by Gallager is considered. Using probabilistic arguments a lower bound on the normalized minimum distance is derived. A new code construction, called Chained Gallager codes, is introduced as the combination of two Gallager codes and its error correcting capabilities are studied.

A lower bound on the minimum distance of chained Gallager codes

Victor Zyablov, Florian Hug, Rolf Johannesson

Based on the combination of two regular Gallager (Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC)) codes, we will introduce a new code construction, called Chained Gallager codes. Following Gallager’s method we will derive a lower bound on the normalized minimum distance for the ensemble of Chained Gallager codes. Applying this lower bound on the normalized minimum distance to different transmissions schemes with two parallel and independent channels, the error correcting capabilities will be studied, stressing the advantages of Chained Gallager codes.

On the error-correcting capability of LDPC codes

Kamil Sh. Zigangirov, A. E. Pusane, D. K. Zigangirov +1 more

We consider the ensemble of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes introduced by Gallager [1]. The Zyablov-Pinsker majority-logic iterative algorithm [2] for decoding LDPC codes is analyzed on the binary symmetric channel. An analytical lower bound on the error-correcting capability τ max that grows linearly in the code block length is obtained.

Distance Bounds for an Ensemble of LDPC Convolutional Codes

Arvind Sridharan, Dmitri V. Truhachev, Michael Lentmaier +2 more

An ensemble of$(J,K)$-regular low-density parity- check (LDPC) convolutional codes is introduced and existence-type lower bounds on the minimum distance$d _ {\rm L}$of code segments of finite length$L$and on the free distance$d _{\rm free}$are derived. For sufficiently large constraint lengths$\nu$, the distances are shown to grow linearly with$\nu$and the ratio$d_ {\rm L}/\nu$approaches the ratio$d _{ {\rm free}}/\nu$for large$L$. Moreover, the ratio of free distance to constraint length is several times larger than the ratio of minimum distance to block length for Gallager's ensemble of (J,K)-regular LDPC block codes.

A Class of Improved Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Constructed Based on Gallager's Form

Guangen Wu, Pinyi Ren

Focused on the problem that short cycles degrade the iterative decoding performance of finite length LDPC, a class of improved low density parity check (LDPC) codes constructed based on Gallager's form is designed. On the basis of keeping down the basic form of Gallager's construction, a quasi-cyclic form is used, then the new codes are free of cycles of length 4 and have good minimum distance. Simulation results demonstrated that the improved codes are better than Gallager's codes when block length is small

A REVIEW OF CONSTRUCTION METHODS FOR REGULAR LDPC CODES

Nisha Sarwade

Low-Density parity-check (LDPC) codes are one of the most powerful error correcting codes available today. Their Shannon capacity approaching performance and lower decoding complexity have made them the best choice for many wired and wireless applications. This paper gives an overview about LDPC codes and compares the Gallager’s method, Reed-Solomon based algebraic method and the Progressive edge growth (PEG) combinatorial method for the construction of regular LDPC codes.
