Self-Induced Transparency in Excitons

Abstract

The interaction of intense coherent light with Frenkel excitons has been studied for investigating the self-induced transparency. Some nonlinear effects neglected before have been included. It is found that the frequency spectrum consistent with the pulse propagation is wider by two orders of magnitude compared with the previous result.

Coherent two-photon interaction of laser radiation with Frenkel excitons

É Gaĭzhauskas, I A Poluéktov, Yurii M Popov

It is shown theoretically that self-induced transparency may occur during propagation of a laser radiation pulse in the case of two-photon interaction with small-radius excitons. An experimental method for the observation of this effect is suggested.

Non-Linear Polaritons by Frenkel Excitons

Masahiro Inoue

By using the model of two level atoms and the boson description of the Frenkel excitons, the dispersion relation of the polariton for intense radiation field is investigated. It is shown that the quenching effect of the dipole moment and the effect of the exciton-exciton interaction modify the dispersion curve significantly. The possibility of the self-induced transparency of a pulse wave is examined by taking into account the polariton effect, and a negative answer is obtained.

The coherent non-linear light propagation in crystal in the exciton range of the spectrum

S. N. Belkin, P. I. Khadzhi, S. A. Moskalenko +1 more

The phenomenon of self-induced transparency (SIT) in the exciton range of the spectrum consists of the propagation through the crystal of solitary wave packets of coherent excitons and photons with anomalous small losses. In the running frame of reference at the site occupied by the soliton a single aperiodic transformation of photons into excitons and a reverse motion of the energy into the field takes place. The solutions of the SIT equations have been received in the slowly-varying amplitude approximation. Taking into account the phase modulation, the authors have shown the appearance of the branch of the carrier wave frequency with anomalous dispersion not only at the given pulse width but at the given pulse amplitude. They have also found the exact solution of the above mentioned equations taking into account the effect of saturation of the dipole momentum transition from the crystal ground state to the exciton state. It leads to the increasing of the soliton time width, to the decreasing of its amplitude and worsens the SIT observation.

Theory of Many Wannier Excitons. II. Absence of Self-Induced Transparency

Eiichi Hanamura

The present paper has the dual purposes. As the first purpose, it is demonstrated that the boson description of Wannier excitons introduced in the preceding paper is suitable also to discussion of non-linear coherent interaction of Wannier excitons with the radiation field. The second purpose is to discuss the possibility of self-induced transparency due to Wannier excitons on the basis of the boson description by making clear the difference between a two-level atomic system and a system of excitons which can propagate in a crystal as polariton. As a result, stable pulse propagation of the radiation field is shown to be prevented by the polariton effect of excitons.

High-intensity pulse propagation in semiconductors: on-resonant self-induced transmission and effects in the continuum

Harald W. Giessen, Stefan Lindén, Juergen Kuhl +5 more

We perform high-intensity pulse propagation experiments in semiconductors. On a free exciton resonance, we demonstrate coherent Self-Induced Transmission. Tuning the laser towards higher energy, thus exciting continuum states, the degree of transmission is reduced. The pulse breakup vanishes. Increasing the pulse intensity by several orders of magnitude, pulse breakup can be observed again.

Coherent effects in the propagation of ultrashort light pulses in resonant media. Part I (review)

I A Poluéktov, Yurii M Popov, V S Roĭtberg

A review is given of the investigations of the coherent interaction of light pulses with resonantly absorbing two-level media. An analysis is made of the self-induced transparency discovered by McCall and Hahn and of its importance in quantum electronics. Bleached states associated with the phase modulation are considered in detail. A comparison is made with the theory of nonlinear waves of different physical origin. A review is given of some possible physical applications associated with the discriminatory nature of the transmission and delay of light in the self-induced transparency effect.
