Abstract

We apply two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing with a resonant intermediate state to the observation of the broadening and shifting of the barium Rydberg level 6s24d 1 D 2 by collision with argon. The collision broadening and shifting cross sections are measured. This technique is purely optical, and can investigate the pressure dependence of the transverse relaxation rate Γ 21 between the Rydberg state and an intermediate state, as well as the transverse relaxation rate Γ 20 between the Rydberg state and the ground state.

Measurement of the argon-gas-induced broadening and shifting of the barium Rydberg levels by two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing

We apply two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing with a resonant intermediate state for observing the broadening and the shifting of the barium Rydberg 6snd 1D2 series by collision with argon. The collision broadenings and the collision shifting cross sections are measured for n=1633. This technique is a purely optical means, and can achieve Doppler-free resolution of narrow spectral structures of Rydberg levels when the incident lasers have narrow bandwidths. Different from other experimental methods of studying the pressure dependence of the longitudinal relaxation rate of Rydberg states, our method is to investigate the pressure dependence of the transverse relaxation rate of the transition.

Study of the satellite line in measurement of the argon -gas-induced broadening of the barium Rydberg levels by two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing

We study the satellite lines in measurement of the foreign-gas-induced broadening of the barium Rydberg levels by two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NFWM). The NFWM spectra of the 6s2 1S0-6snd 1D2 (n=16, 22, 36) transitions at different argon pressures are measured. The plots of the center of satellite line principal quantum number and versus pressure are discussed. The contribution of satellite line to the NFWM spectral profile is analyzed. We find that the pressure-broadening rate coefficient can be corrected when the contribution of satellite line is considered.

Observation of Rydberg Series in Sodium Vapour by Two-Photon Resonant Nondegenerate Four-Wave Mixing

We apply two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing with a resonant intermediate state for the observation of Rydberg states in sodium vapour. The broadening and shift of the sodium 3 S -11 D transition perturbed by argon are investigated. This technique can achieve Doppler-free resolution of narrow spectral structures of Rydberg levels if lasers with narrow bandwidths are employed.

Observation of Rydberg series of neutral barium by two-photon resonent nondegenerate four-wave mixing

Sun Jiang, Zuo Zhan-Chun, Guo Qing-Lin +5 more

We have applied two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NFWM) with a resonant intermediate state to measure the energy levels of the Ba even-parity J=0 and J=2 series. Differing from other experiment techniques, our method is a pure optical technique. Instead of detecting electrons or ions, the signal here is a coherent light. Two-photon resonant NFWM is a Doppler-free spectroscopy when the incident laser beams have narrow bandwidths.

Frequency shifts and line broadenings in collisions between Rydberg and ground-state alkali-metal atoms

Douglas C. Thompson, E. Weinberger, Guoqing Xu +1 more

The technique of Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy was used to measure rates for line broadenings and frequency shifts of Rydberg levels with pressure. Measurements were made of spectra of $^{2}\mathrm{S}$ and $^{2}\mathrm{D}$ states (with n\ensuremath{\sim}10--40) for ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{\mathrm{*}\mathrm{*}}$+Rb and ${\mathrm{K}}^{\mathrm{*}\mathrm{*}}$+K, and of $^{2}\mathrm{S}$ states (with n=14--29) for ${\mathrm{K}}^{\mathrm{*}\mathrm{*}}$+Rb. Large oscillations are observed in both broadening and shift rates for n\ensuremath{\sim}20--30 in all series except for the $^{2}\mathrm{D}$ series in ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{\mathrm{*}\mathrm{*}}$+Rb. Overall rates for broadening and shift are compared with a theory based on the ``free-electron'' model. The observed oscillations are inconsistent with theories based on the resonance scattering of the Rydberg electron by the perturbing atom. A possible alternative mechanism related to interference in l-mixing collisions is suggested.
