Attenuation, Delay and Noise properties of light slowed by Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Kerry B. Burke

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency is an effect that allows light to propagate through an otherwise opaque material. Due to the dispersion properties of the EIT system, it also slows the information carried on the sideband frequencies of a light beam. The effect can also be used to store information in an atomic medium. It was therefore proposed that EIT systems can be applied in optical cicuits, specifically with regard to quantum information processing where it is necessary to delay, or store quantum states of light. Hence it is necessary to understand how EIT systems influence the quantum state of a light beam and whether EIT systems can ever have the potential to delay and store quantum information at the quantum noise limit. ¶ This thesis examines the transfer of an optical signal at the sideband frequencies through an EIT medium. A comprehensive characterisation of an EIT system in terms of delay and signal transmission is performed. This measurement technique provides data on EIT performance over a range of signal frequencies and a range of experimental parameters. Experiments were conducted with both pure Rubidium vapour and Rubidium vapour mixed with a noble gas. ¶ Studies have been made into a new system of measurement that will allow delay, attenuation and added noise spectra to be assessed via a single-shot measurement.

Frequency Conversion Based on Light Storage in Pr:YSO Crystal

Dun-Mao Du

The authors experimentally demonstrated the optical information transfer between two frequencies channels based on electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in a four level double lambda system in Pr∶YSO crystal.Under the conditions of EIT,a weak probe pulse is slowed during the propagation in the crystal.A group velocity of 86 m/s is observed experimentally.By adiabatically switching off the control field, most of the probe pulse is stored in the sample.By switching on two control fields(with distinct frequencies and direction) in the release process, the stored optical information is distributed into two spatially-separated channels from the original slow light pulse with a single channel.By adjusting the two control fields in the release process, the information of slowed light pulse can be converted between the frequencies channels.

Direct imaging of slow, stored and stationary EIT polaritons

Geoff Campbell, Young‐Wook Cho, Jian Su +4 more

Stationary and slow light effects are of great interest for quantum information applications. Using laser-cooled Rb87 atoms, we performed side imaging of our atomic ensemble under slow and stationary light conditions, which allows direct comparison with numerical models. The polaritons were generated using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), with stationary light generated using counter-propagating control fields. By controlling the power ratio of the two control fields, we show fine control of the group velocity of the stationary light. We also compare the dynamics of stationary light using monochromatic and bichromatic control fields. Our results show negligible difference between the two situations, in contrast to previous work in EIT-based systems.
