Geometry of Gaussian quantum states

Abstract

We study the Hilbert–Schmidt measure on the manifold of mixed Gaussian states in multi-mode continuous variable quantum systems. An analytical expression for the Hilbert–Schmidt volume element is derived. Its corresponding probability measure can be used to study typical properties of Gaussian states. It turns out that although the manifold of Gaussian states is unbounded, an ensemble of Gaussian states distributed according to this measure still has a normalizable distribution of symplectic eigenvalues, from which unitarily invariant properties can be obtained. By contrast, we find that for an ensemble of one-mode Gaussian states based on the Bures measure the corresponding distribution cannot be normalized. As important applications, we determine the distribution and the mean value of von Neumann entropy and purity for the Hilbert–Schmidt measure.

Geometry on the manifold of Gaussian quantum channels

Katarzyna Siudzińska, Kimmo Luoma, Walter T. Strunz

In the space of quantum channels, we establish the geometry that allows us to make statistical predictions about relative volumes of entanglement breaking channels among all the Gaussian quantum channels. The underlying metric is constructed using the Choi-Jamio\l{}kowski isomorphism between the continuous-variable Gaussian states and channels. This construction involves the Hilbert-Schmidt distance in quantum state space. The volume element of the one-mode Gaussian channels can be expressed in terms of local symplectic invariants. We analytically compute the relative volumes of the one-mode Gaussian entanglement breaking and incompatibility breaking channels. Finally, we show that, when given the purities of the Choi-Jamio\l{}kowski state of the channel, one can determine whether or not such channel is incompatibility breaking.

Typical Gaussian quantum information

Philipp Sohr, Valentin Link, Kimmo Luoma +1 more

Abstract We investigate different geometries and invariant measures on the space of mixed Gaussian quantum states. We show that when the global purity of the state is held fixed, these measures coincide and it is possible, within this constraint, to define a unique notion of volume on the space of mixed Gaussian states. We then use the so defined measure to study typical non-classical correlations of two mode mixed Gaussian quantum states, in particular entanglement and steerability. We show that under the purity constraint alone, typical values for symplectic invariants can be computed very elegantly, irrespectively of the non-compactness of the underlying state space. Then we consider finite volumes by constraining the purity and energy of the Gaussian state and compute typical values of quantum correlations numerically.

Statistical Mechanics of Random Mixed State Ensembles with Fixed Energy

Harry J. D. Miller

Mixed state ensembles such as the Bures-Hall and Hilbert-Schmidt measure are probability distributions that characterise the statistical properties of random density matrices and can be used to determine the typical features of mixed quantum states. Here we extend this framework by considering the properties of random states with fixed average energy, and the ensemble-averaged density matrix is derived under this additional physical constraint. This gives rise to a type of microcanonical ensemble for random mixed states and we connect its properties to a statistical mechanical entropy and temperature. Our results are illustrated using a variety of simple spin systems, and we find that they can exhibit exotic features such as phase transitions in the absence of energetic interactions and finite relative energy fluctuations in the thermodynamic limit.

Entropy-based random quantum states

Harry J. D. Miller

In quantum information geometry, the curvature of von-Neumann entropy and relative entropy induce a natural metric on the space of mixed quantum states. Here we use this information metric to construct a random matrix ensemble for states and investigate its key statistical properties such as the asymptotic eigenvalue density and mean entropy. We present an algorithm for generating these entropy-based random density matrices, thus providing a new recipe for random state generation that differs from the well established Hilbert-Schmidt and Bures-Hall ensemble approaches. We also prove a duality between the entropy-based state ensemble and a random Hamiltonian model constructed from the thermodynamic length over the set of Gibbs states. This Hamiltonian model is found to display Wigner level repulsion, implying that the dual state ensemble can be realised as a random Gibbs state with respect to a class of chaotic Hamiltonians. As an application we use our model to compute the survival probability of a randomly evolved thermofield double state, predicting a ramp and plateau over time that is characteristic of quantum chaos. For other applications, the entropy-based ensemble can be used as an uninformative prior for Bayesian quantum state or Hamiltonian tomography.

Invariant measures on multimode quantum Gaussian states

Cosmo Lupo, Stefano Mancini, Antonella De Pasquale +3 more

We derive the invariant measure on the manifold of multimode quantum Gaussian states, induced by the Haar measure on the group of Gaussian unitary transformations. To this end, by introducing a bipartition of the system in two disjoint subsystems, we use a parameterization highlighting the role of nonlocal degrees of freedom—the symplectic eigenvalues—which characterize quantum entanglement across the given bipartition. A finite measure is then obtained by imposing a physically motivated energy constraint. By averaging over the local degrees of freedom we finally derive the invariant distribution of the symplectic eigenvalues in some cases of particular interest for applications in quantum optics and quantum information.
