Abstract

The monopole (L=0) and quadrupole (L=2) strength distributions in normal $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ clusters are calculated within the random-phase approximation. We use a phenomenological, zero-range $^{3}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}^{3}$He interaction to generate the Hartree-Fock single-particle spectrum and the residual particle-hole interaction. The evolution of the collective modes with the number of atoms in the cluster is discussed.

Self-consistent determination of the one-body density matrix and particle-hole excitations

F. Catara, M. Grasso, G. Piccitto +1 more

We develop a procedure recently proposed for the treatment of correlations in finite Fermi systems in a more consistent way than the random phase approximation (RPA). The one-body density matrix in the correlated ground state is now no more assumed to be diagonal in the Hartree-Fock basis. An expression is rather provided where this quantity is expressed in terms of the X and Y amplitudes of the particle-hole phonon operators. A set of RPA-like equations depending only on the one-body density matrix is then constructed by means of the method of linearized equations of motion and solved via an iterative procedure. The procedure is employed to calculate spectra and strength distributions of several neutral and charged Na and Li metal clusters within the jellium approximation. Improvements are observed with respect to standard RPA calculations.

Quantum mechanics of the fractional-statistics gas: Particle-hole interaction

Charles B. Hanna, R. B. Laughlin, Alexander L. Fetter

We compute the collective-mode spectrum of the fractional-statistics gas using the set of single particle-hole pairs of the Hartree-Fock ground state as a variational basis. We find that the particle-hole interaction reduces the energy of this mode to a finite value but does not cause it to disperse linearly to zero at long wavelengths, as would be expected of a superfluid. We attribute this to a flaw in the variational ground state, implicitly rectified by computing the response functions in the random-phase approximation. The formalism introduced in this paper provides the machinery for performing precise versions of such calculations.

Collective modes of the one-dimensional Fermi gas within the quasiparticle random-phase approximation

T. Alm, Peter Schuck

The one-dimensional Fermi gas with attractive \ensuremath{\delta} interaction is treated in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation at zero temperature. The collective modes are evaluated numerically in the high-density (weak-coupling) and in the low-density (strong-coupling) case. Whereas in the weak-coupling limit the ordinary (particle-hole) random-phase approximation is approached for low momenta, the collective mode in the strong-coupling limit reproduces the Bogoliubov mode for the weakly interacting gas of particle-particle pairs (bosons). We find a smooth evolution of the collective modes from weak to strong coupling. Analytical approximations for the dispersion relation in the long-wavelength limit are derived for both weak and strong coupling. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Microscopic description of monopole isovector collective excitations in /sup 40/Ca

B.I. Barts, Yu. L. Bolotin, Vsevolod Yu. Gonchar +1 more

The time-dependent Hartree-Fock method is used for description of collective excitations in nuclei. With this formulation of the effective interaction of the nucleons in the nucleus, both the single-particle basis and the particle-hole Green's function characterizing the collective properties of the nucleus are determined. The technique of construction of the particle-hole Green's function is discussed in detail.

Mixing of Collective States in an Exactly Soluble Three-Level Model

N. Meshkov

A general class of exactly soluble three-level models is presented for an $N$-fermion system. Assuming a monopole-monopole interaction among the fermions allows one to express the model Hamiltonian in terms of the generators of the $S{U}_{3}$ group. A specialized version of this class of models is adapted for the study of mixing two collective states of opposite parity, analogous to the mixing of giant-dipole-resonance and surface quadrupole vibrations in nuclei. Exact results of the model are studied as a function of interaction parameters and compared with approximations including up to three-particle-three-hole excitations. It is shown that in the model many-particle-many-hole states play an important role in the mixing of collective states and cannot be properly neglected. The implications of this result for the study of actual nuclei is discussed.

Collective particle hole excitation in a deformed ground state

W. D. Heiss, Richard H. Lemmer

It is shown that stable collective particle hole excitations are possible in a generalized Hartree-Fock basis which describes a ground state that has less symmetry than the Hamiltonian. It appears that these collective states remain stable also for strong attractive interaction.[NUCLEAR STRUCTURE Nuclear matter density fluctuations, generalized random phase approximation.]
