We consider the three-boson problem with $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function interactions in one spatial dimension. Three different approaches are used to calculate the phase shifts, which we interpret in the context of the effective range expansion, for the scattering of one free particle off a bound pair. We first follow a procedure outlined by McGuire in order to obtain an analytic expression for the desired
S-matrix element. This result is then compared to a variational calculation in the adiabatic hyperspherical representation, and to a numerical solution to the momentum-space Faddeev equations. We find excellent agreement with the exact phase shifts, and comment on some of the important features in the scattering and bound-state sectors. In particular, we find that the
1+2 scattering length is divergent, marking the presence of a zero-energy resonance which appears as a feature when the pairwise interactions are short range. Finally, we consider the introduction of a three-body interaction, and comment on the cutoff dependence of the coupling.
We derive an effective equation for the dynamics of many identical bosons in dimension one in the presence of a tiny impurity. The interaction between every pair of bosons is mediated by the impurity through a positive three-body potential. Assuming a simultaneous mean-field and short-range scaling with the short-range proceeding slower than the mean-field, and choosing an initial fully condensed state, we prove propagation of chaos and obtain an effective one-particle Schrödinger equation with a defocusing nonlinearity concentrated at a point. More precisely, we prove convergence of one-particle density operators in the trace-class topology and estimate the fluctuations as superexponential. This is the first derivation of the so-called nonlinear delta model, widely investigated in the last decades, as a phenomenological model for several physical phenomena .
Abstract We study the Hamiltonian for a system of N identical bosons interacting with an impurity, i.e., a different particle, via zero-range forces in dimension three. It is well known that, following the standard approach, one obtains the Ter-Martirosyan Skornyakov Hamiltonian which is unbounded from below. In order to avoid such instability problem, we introduce a three-body force acting at short distances. The effect of this force is to reduce to zero the strength of the zero-range interaction between two particles, i.e., the impurity and a boson, when another boson approaches the common position of the first two particles. We show that the Hamiltonian defined with such regularized interaction is self-adjoint and bounded from below if the strength of the three-body force is sufficiently large. The method of the proof is based on a careful analysis of the corresponding quadratic form.
