Quantum-Disordered Antiferromagnets on Random Lattices

Abstract

We report on the non‐trivial interplay between geometric randomess and quantum fluctuations in two‐dimensional S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets (AFs), studied by quantum Monte Carlo. The case of the inhomogeneously bond‐diluted square lattice AF in zero field and of the site‐diluted bilayer AF in a finite magnetic field are emblematic examples of randomness‐induced quantum‐disordered phases on percolated lattices. These phases display unconventional properties, being gapless but with a finite correlation length.

Quantum Percolation in Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

Rong Yu, Tommaso Roscilde, Stephan Haas

The interplay of geometric randomness and strong quantum fluctuations is an exciting topic in quantum many-body physics, leading to the emergence of novel quantum phases in strongly correlated electron systems. Recent investigations have focused on the case of homogeneous site and bond dilution in the quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice, reporting a classical geometric percolation transition between magnetic order and disorder. In this study we show how inhomogeneous bond dilution leads to percolative quantum phase transitions, which we have studied extensively by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Quantum percolation introduces a new class of two-dimensional spin liquids, characterized by an infinite percolating network with vanishing antiferromagnetic order parameter.

Quantum Phase Transition of the Randomly Diluted Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on a Square Lattice

Kiyoshi Katō, Synge Todo, Kenji Harada +3 more

Ground-state magnetic properties of the diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice are investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method with the continuous-time loop algorithm. It is found that the critical concentration of magnetic sites is independent of the spin size S, and equal to the two-dimensional percolation threshold. However, the existence of quantum fluctuations makes the critical exponents deviate from those of the classical percolation transition. Furthermore, we found that the transition is not universal, i.e., the critical exponents significantly depend on S.

Quantum disorder and Griffiths singularities in bond-diluted two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Rong Yu, Tommaso Roscilde, Stephan Haas

We investigate quantum phase transitions in the spin-$1∕2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on square lattices with inhomogeneous bond dilution. It is shown that quantum fluctuations can be continuously tuned by inhomogeneous bond dilution, eventually leading to the destruction of long-range magnetic order on the percolating cluster. Two multicritical points are identified at which the magnetic transition separates from the percolation transition, introducing a quantum phase transition. Beyond these multicritical points a quantum-disordered phase appears, characterized by an infinite percolating cluster with short ranged antiferromagnetic order. In this phase, the low-temperature uniform susceptibility diverges algebraically with non-universal exponents. This is a signature that the quantum-disordered phase is a quantum Griffiths phase, as also directly confirmed by the statistical distribution of local gaps. This study thus presents evidence of a genuine quantum Griffiths phenomenon in a two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

Finite-Size Scaling in the Diluted Two-Dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Anders W. Sandvik

Ground state properties of the randomly diluted two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet are discussed. Quantum Monte Carlo (stochastic series expansion) data for L×L lattices, with L up to 64, are extrapolated to infinite size for dilution fractions p between 0 (clean system) and p* (the percolation threshold). The sublattice magnetization is calculated using a decomposition into a classical and a quantum mechanical factor, which are evaluated separately. The quantum mechanical factor (the sublattice magnetization of the largest connected cluster of magnetic sites) remains finite at the percolation threshold, implying that the dilution driven order-disorder transition is a classical percolation transition. The spin stiffness is calculated using the winding number fluctuations.

Quantum Phase Transition of Two-Dimensional Diluted Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Synge Todo, Chitoshi Yasuda, Kiyoshi Katō +4 more

Quantum phase transition of site-diluted and bond-diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnets on square lattices is studied. By using the novel continuous-time loop algorithm, we perform quantum Monte Carlo simulations on quite larger lattices at extremely lower temperatures than the previous numerical studies. It is found that the antiferromagnetic long-range order at T = 0 persists so long as a cluster of magnetic sites percolates, that is, the critical concentration is equal to the classical percolation threshold, in both of the site-diluted and bond-diluted cases. Furthermore, we find that some critical exponents, such as the magnetization exponent β, are non-classical and strongly depend on the spin size S. On the other hand, we show that the correlation-length exponent ν is universal and is equal to the classical value (ν=4/3).

Classical percolation transition in the diluted two-dimensional S=12 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Anders W. Sandvik

The two-dimensional antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with random site dilution is studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Ground-state properties of the largest connected cluster on $L\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}L$ lattices, with L up to 64, are calculated at the classical percolation threshold. In addition, clusters with a fixed number ${N}_{c}$ of spins on an infinite lattice at the percolation density are studied for ${N}_{c}$ up to 1024. The disorder averaged sublattice magnetization per spin extrapolates to the same nonzero infinite-size value for both types of clusters. Hence, the percolating clusters, which are fractal with dimensionality $d=91/48,$ have antiferromagnetic long-range order. This implies that the order-disorder transition driven by site dilution occurs exactly at the percolation threshold and that the exponents are classical. The same conclusion is reached for the bond-diluted system. The full sublattice magnetization versus site dilution curve is obtained in terms of a decomposition into a classical geometrical factor and a factor containing all the effects of quantum fluctuations. The spin stiffness is shown to obey the same scaling as the conductivity of a random resistor network.
