Blocking, persistence and scaling in the 2d Ising model

Abstract

The non-equilibrium dynamics of the disordered 2d Ising model is studied numerically. Evidence is found for “blocking” in both the bond-diluted and the ±J models. For strong bond-dilution the residual persistence decays exponentially to zero at large times. For the ±J model it is found to decay algebraically. Our results indicate that persistence is highly nonuniversal.

Non-Equilibrium Dynamics of the Disordered Ising Model

S. Jain

The non-equilibrium dynamics of the bond-diluted Ising model in two-dimensions (2d) is investigated numerically for a range of bond concentration 0≤p≤1. The fraction of spins which never flip, P(∞), is found to increase monotonically from zero for p = 0 with increasing bond concentration to a maximum value of about 0.46 for p = 0.5 and then decreases to zero for p = 1. For strong bond-dilution (0≤p≤0.5) we find that r(t) = P(t)-P(∞) decays exponentially to zero at large times. for weak dilution (0.975≤p ≪ 1.0), three distinct regimes are identified: a short time regime where the behaviour is purelike; an intermediate regime where the persistence probability decays nonalgebraically with time; and a long time \lqfrozen \rq regime where the domains cease to grow. Our results for strong dilution are consistent with recent work of Newman and Stein, and suggest that persistence in diluted and pure systems falls into different classes. Furthermore, its behaviour would also appear to depend crucially on the strength of the dilution present.

Persistence in the zero-temperature dynamics of the diluted Ising ferromagnet in two dimensions

S. Jain

The nonequilibrium dynamics of the strongly diluted random-bond Ising model in two dimensions (2D) is investigated numerically. The persistence probability, P(t), of spins which do not flip by time t is found to decay to a nonzero, dilution-dependent value P(infinity). We find that p(t)=P(t)-P(infinity) decays exponentially to zero at large times. Furthermore, the fraction of spins which never flip is a monotonically increasing function over the range of bond-dilution considered. Our findings, which are consistent with a recent result of Newman and Stein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 3944 (1999)], suggest that persistence in diluted and pure systems falls into different classes. Furthermore, its behavior would also appear to depend crucially on the strength of the dilution present.

Non-Markovian persistence in the diluted Ising model at criticality

R Paul, Grégory Schehr

We investigate global persistence properties for the non-equilibrium critical dynamics of the randomly diluted Ising model. The disorder-averaged persistence probability c ( t ) of the global magnetization is found to decay algebraically with an exponent θ c that we compute analytically in a dimensional expansion in d = 4 − . Corrections to Markov process are found to occur already at one loop order and θ c is thus a novel exponent characterizing this disordered critical point. Our result is thoroughly compared with Monte Carlo simulations in d = 3, which also include a measurement of the initial slip exponent. Taking carefully into account corrections to scaling, θ c is found to be universal, independent of the dilution factor p along the critical line at T c ( p ), and in good agreement with our one-loop calculation.

TWO-TEMPERATURE NON-EQUILIBRIUM ISING MODELS

Pablo Tamayo, Rajan Gupta, Francis J. Alexander

We present results from a computational study of a class of 2D two-temperature non-equilibrium Ising models. In these systems the dynamics is a local competition of two equilibrium dynamics at different temperatures. We analyzed non-equilibrium versions of Metropolis, heat bath/Glauber and Swendsen-Wang dynamics and found strong evidence that some of these dynamics have the same critical exponents and belong to the same universality class as the equilibrium 2D Ising model.

Minority-spin dynamics in the nonhomogeneous Ising model: Diverging time scales and exponents

Pratik Mullick, Parongama Sen

We investigate the dynamical behavior of the Ising model under a zero-temperature quench with the initial fraction of up spins $0\ensuremath{\le}x\ensuremath{\le}1$. In one dimension, the known results for persistence probability are verified; it shows algebraic decay for both up and down spins asymptotically with different exponents. It is found that the conventional finite-size scaling is valid here. In two dimensions, however, the persistence probabilities are no longer algebraic; in particular for $x\ensuremath{\le}0.5$, persistence for the up (minority) spins shows the behavior ${P}_{\text{min}}(t)\ensuremath{\sim}{t}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}}exp[\ensuremath{-}{(t/\ensuremath{\tau})}^{\ensuremath{\delta}}]$ with time $t$, while for the down (majority) spins, ${P}_{\text{maj}}(t)$ approaches a finite value. We find that the timescale $\ensuremath{\tau}$ diverges as ${({x}_{c}\ensuremath{-}x)}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\lambda}}$, where ${x}_{c}=0.5$ and $\ensuremath{\lambda}\ensuremath{\simeq}2.31$. The exponent $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ varies as ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{2d}+{c}_{0}{({x}_{c}\ensuremath{-}x)}^{\ensuremath{\beta}}$ where ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{2d}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.215$ is very close to the persistence exponent in two dimensions; $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\simeq}1$. The results in two dimensions can be understood qualitatively by studying the exit probability, which for different system size is found to have the form $E(x)=f\left[(\frac{x\ensuremath{-}{x}_{c}}{{x}_{c}}){L}^{1/\ensuremath{\nu}}\right]$, with $\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\approx}1.47$. This result suggests that $\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\sim}{L}^{\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{z}}$, where $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{z}=\frac{\ensuremath{\lambda}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}=1.57\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11$ is an exponent not explored earlier.

Persistence in the two dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model

Thibault Blanchard, Leticia F. Cugliandolo, Marco Picco

We present very accurate numerical estimates of the time and size dependence of the zero-temperature local persistence in the 2d ferromagnetic Ising model. We show that the effective exponent decays algebraically to an asymptotic value θ that depends upon the initial condition. More precisely, we find that θ takes one universal value 0.199(2) for initial conditions with short-range spatial correlations as in a paramagnetic state, and the value 0.033(1) for initial conditions with the long-range spatial correlations of the critical Ising state. We checked universality by working with a square and a triangular lattice, and by imposing free and periodic boundary conditions. We found that the effective exponent suffers from stronger finite size effects in the former case.
