Gauge theories of high- Tc superconductors

Boris Blok, H. Monien

It is widely believed that the t-J model contains some of the key physics of the high-temperature superconductors. It was proposed that the low-energy physics of the t-J model can be described by a gauge theory of fermions and bosons coupled to a gauge field. The normal state of these fermions was assumed to be a Fermi liquid. We show that perturbation theory around the Fermi-liquid state breaks down at low temperature in a wide class of gauge theories of high-temperature superconductors due to the interaction with an overdamped singular mode arising from the gauge field. This breakdown is present even if the coupling to the gauge field is arbitrary small.

Angle resolved photoemission spectra of high-Tc superconductors: A Fermi-liquid based analysis

Hayoung Kim, Peter S. Riseborough

Recent high resolution angle resolved photoemission spectra for the high temperature superconductors are analyzed on the basis of a fermi‐liquid theory of highly correlated metals. Due to the presence of large many‐body effects, the region over which typical Landau fermi‐liquid properties holds is small. The spectrum is dominated by the self‐energy variation over an intermediate range of energies, and in this region the spectrum bears a close resemblance to that found in the phenomenological marginal fermi‐liquid theory of Varma et al.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectra of high- Tc superconductors: A Fermi-liquid-based analysis

Hayoung Kim, Peter S. Riseborough

Recent high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra for the high-temperature superconductors are analyzed on the basis of a Fermi-liquid-based theory of a highly correlated metal. Due to the presence of large many-body effects, the energy range over which typical Landau Fermi-liquid properties hold is negligibly small. The theoretically calculated spectrum, near the Fermi energy, is dominated by the self-energy variation over an intermediate range of energies. The spectrum is compared and contrasted with other theories as well as with the experimental data.
