Collapsing dynamics of attractive Bose–Einstein condensates in random potentials

Madjda Kamel, Abdelâali Boudjemâa

In this paper, we study the stationary and dynamical properties of three-dimensional trapped Bose–Einstein condensates with attractive interactions subjected to a random potential. To this end, a variational method is applied to solve the underlying Gross–Pitaevskii equation. We derive analytical predictions for the energy, the equilibrium width, and evolution laws of the condensate parameter. The breathing mode oscillations’ frequency of the condensate has been also calculated in terms of the gas and disorder parameters. We analyze in addition the dynamics of collapse from the Gaussian approximation. Surprisingly, we find that the intriguing interplay of the attractive interaction and disorder effects leads to prevent collapse of the condensate.

On Bose-Einstein condensates in disordered media

Marius Lemm, Simone Rademacher, Jingxuan Zhang

We consider the quantum dynamics of interacting bosons in the mean-field regime when they are subjected to a disordered potential, which is either random or quasi-periodic. Starting from a spatially localized Bose-Einstein condensate, we prove that fluctuations around the condensate propagate with a small velocity due to the disorder. This provides an example of a disordered many-body system with provably slow transport behavior in any spatial dimension. The main technical novelty is an interaction picture analysis relative to the Anderson-localized one-body dynamics.

Localization of an inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate in a moving random potential

Ardavan Alamir, P. Capuzzi, Patrizia Vignolo

We study the dynamics of a harmonically trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate subjected to a moving disorder potential of finite extent. We show that, due to the inhomogeneity of the sample, only a percentage of the atoms is localized at supersonic velocities of a random potential. We find that this percentage can be sensitively increased by introducing suitable correlations in the disorder potential such as those provided by random dimers.
