Photoexcitation of the one-dimensional extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter-filling

Yupeng Li, Yu-Chang 羽畅 Liu 刘, Yu-Zhuo 玉卓 Zhao 赵 +2 more

Abstract Utilizing the time-dependent Lanczos method, we investigate the photoexcitation dynamics of the one-dimensional (1D) extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter filling. In equilibrium, it is well established that introducing the nearest-neighbour interaction V into the 1D Peierls–Hubbard model can lead to the formation of Mott–Hubbard excitons, which exhibit a characteristic frequency in the optical conductivity that is lower than the Mott gap. Ultrafast photoexcitation of this model gives rise to a transient metallic state for V < 2, characterized by several features, including a zero-frequency Drude peak in the post-pump optical conductivity, an increase in the density of charge carriers, and enhanced electron hopping between dimers. In contrast, when V ≥ 2, this metallic state is no longer observed, as photoinduced carriers bind to form excitons, thereby inhibiting metallic behavior. These results highlight a parallel between the optical excitation of the 1D extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter filling and that of the 1D extended Hubbard model at half filling, suggesting a universal mechanism governing their photoinduced responses.

Excitons in the One-Dimensional Hubbard Model: A Real-Time Study

K. A. Al-Hassanieh, Fernando Agustín Reboredo, Adrian E. Feiguin +2 more

We study the real-time dynamics of a hole and doubly occupied site pair, namely, a holon and a doublon, in a 1D Hubbard insulator with on-site and nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion. Our analysis shows that the pair is long-lived and the expected decay mechanism to underlying spin excitations is actually inefficient. For a nonzero intersite Coulomb repulsion, we observe that part of the wave function remains in a bound state. Our study also provides insight on the holon-doublon propagation in real space. Because of the one-dimensional nature of the problem, these particles move in opposite directions even in the absence of an applied electric field. The potential relevance of our results to solar cell applications is discussed.

Excitonic wave-packet evolution in a two-orbital Hubbard model chain: A real-time real-space study

Bradraj Pandey, Gonzalo Álvarez, Elbio R. Dagotto

Motivated by experimental developments introducing the concept of spin-orbit separation, we study the real-space real-time evolution of an excitonic wave packet using a two-orbital Hubbard model in a chain. The exciton is created by exciting an electron from a lower-energy half-filled orbital to a higher-energy empty orbital. We carry out the real-time dynamics of the resulting excitonic wave packet using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. We find clear evidence of charge-spin and spin-orbit separation in real space, by tracking the time evolution of local observables. We show that the velocity of the orbiton can be tuned varying the interorbital interactions. We also present a comparative study of the dynamics of a hole in one-orbital and two-orbital Hubbard models. Moreover, we analyze the dynamics of an exciton with spin-flip excitation, where we observe fractionalized spinons induced by Hund's interaction.
