Fundamental theory of light for applications: Notes for five informal lectures

Peter W. Milonni

Published Jun 18, 1993• 0 citations
OpenAlex

Abstract

These notes give an overview of some aspects of the quantum theory of light and its interaction with matter. A description is given of basic emission and absorption processes, as well as the theory of photodetection and optical coherence. Basic research in this area is increasingly relevant to areas of technological importance, including microlaser devices and the noise characteristics of semiconductor lasers.

Introduction to Quantum Optics

G. Grynberg, Alain Aspect, Claude Fabre +1 more

Covering a number of important subjects in quantum optics, this textbook is an excellent introduction for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, familiarizing readers with the basic concepts and formalism as well as the most recent advances. The first part of the textbook covers the semi-classical approach where matter is quantized, but light is not. It describes significant phenomena in quantum optics, including the principles of lasers. The second part is devoted to the full quantum description of light and its interaction with matter, covering topics such as spontaneous emission, and classical and non-classical states of light. An overview of photon entanglement and applications to quantum information is also given. In the third part, non-linear optics and laser cooling of atoms are presented, where using both approaches allows for a comprehensive description. Each chapter describes basic concepts in detail, and more specific concepts and phenomena are presented in 'complements'.

On the quantum theory of light interacting with nano-materials

Masud Mansuripur

The fundamental processes of absorption, stimulated and spontaneous emission, and elastic as well as inelastic scattering involving light and atoms, molecules, and nano-particles have been studied for decades using both classical and quantum theories. While providing an overview of the subject, this paper presents a streamlined approach to studying atom-photon interactions in the context of modern quantum optics in the hope of providing guidance for applications in the general area of molecular and nano-photonic machines.

Emission and Absorption of Radiation by Atoms

Christopher C. Gerry, P. L. Knight

This established textbook provides an accessible but comprehensive introduction to the quantum nature of light and its interaction with matter. The field of quantum optics is covered with clarity and depth, from the underlying theoretical framework of field quantization, atom–field interactions, and quantum coherence theory, to important and modern applications at the forefront of current research such as quantum interferometry, squeezed light, quantum entanglement, cavity quantum electrodynamics, laser-cooled trapped ions, and quantum information processing. The text is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and would be an ideal main text for a course on quantum optics. This long-awaited second edition builds upon the success of the first edition, including many new developments in the field, particularly in the area of quantum state engineering. Additional homework problems have been added, and content from the first edition has been updated and clarified throughout.

Elements of Light-Matter Interaction

Yehoshua Y. Kalisky

This chapter briefly explains several concepts pertaining to the interaction between light and matter. Basic concepts such as Einstein coefficients, which describe the spontaneous emission and the stimulated absorption, as well as the classical and quantum mechanical description of absorption and emission processes are explained. More-detailed descriptions of various emission and absorption models can be found in several textbooks, such as those by Yariv, Siegman, and Miloni and Eberly.

Quantum Theory of Light–Matter Interaction

T U Jeevitha

Abstract: An extensive review of the quantum theory of light-matter interaction is given in this chapter, beginning with its fundamental ideas and historical development. It covers the quantization of the electromagnetic field, atomic models, and important interaction Hamiltonians, including both semi-classical and completely quantum treatments. The role of vacuum fluctuations and fundamental processes like spontaneous and induced emission are examined. Quantum coherence, entanglement, decoherence, and its formal representation using master equations are also covered in this chapter. Modern applications such lasers, quantum sensors, and quantum communication systems are highlighted. The significance of light-matter interaction in furthering quantum science and technology is emphasized in the chapter's conclusion, which also discusses current research trends and future directions. Keywords: Laser, cryptography, Electromagnetic, Quantum, Atomic.
