Topological hardcore bosons on the honeycomb lattice

S. A. Owerre

This paper presents a connection between the topological properties of hardcore bosons and that of magnons in quantum spin magnets. We utilize the Haldane-like hardcore bosons on the honeycomb lattice as an example. We show that this system maps to a spin-1/2 quantum XY model with a next-nearest-neighbour Dzyaloshinsky–Moriya interaction. We obtain the magnon excitations of the quantum spin model and compute the edge states, Berry curvature, and thermal and spin Nernst conductivities. Because of the mapping from spin variables to bosons, the hardcore bosons possess the same nontrivial topological properties as those in quantum spin systems. These results are important in the study of magnetic excitations in quantum magnets and they are also useful for understanding the control of ultracold bosonic quantum gases in honeycomb optical lattices, which is experimentally accessible.

Topological properties of one-dimensional hardcore Bose—Fermi mixture

Yongfei Jia, Huaiming Guo, Jihong Qin +2 more

We study the topological properties of a one-dimensional (1D) hardcore Bose—Fermi mixture using the exact diagonalization method. We firstly add a hardcore boson to a fermionic system and by examining the edge states we find that the quasi-particle manifests the topological properties of the system. Then we study a mixture with 7 fermions and 1 boson. We find that the mixture also exhibits topological properties and its behaviors are similar to that of the corresponding fermionic system. We present a qualitative explanation to understand such behaviors using the mapping between a hardcore boson and a spinless fermion. These results show the existence of topological properties in a 1D hardcore Bose—Fermi mixture and may be realized using cold atoms trapped in optical lattices experimentally.

Condensate ground states of hardcore bosons induced by an array of impurities

J. Y. Liu-Sun, E. S. Ma, Z. Song

Neither hardcore bosons nor fermions can occupy the same lattice site-state. However, a nearest neighbour interaction may counteract the hardcore effect, resulting in condensate states in a bosonic system. In this work, we unveil the underlying mechanism by developing a general method to construct the condensate eigenstates from those of sub-Hamiltonians. As an application, we find that a local on-site potential can induce an evanescent condensate mode. Based on this, exact condensate ground states of hardcore bosons, possessing off-diagonal long-range order, can be constructed when an array of impurities is applied. The effect of the off-resonance impurity on the condensate ground states is also investigated using numerical simulations of the dynamic response.
