Abstract

Reversible computing is an emerging and promising technique due to its wide applications in quantum, optical and DNA computing and many more. Reversible circuit synthesis is a main focus for researchers as conventional synthesis techniques are not suitable for reversible circuits. Our work focuses on BDD based synthesis as it has capabilities of realizing circuit for large boolean functions unlike other reversible synthesis methods. Existing BDD based synthesis techniques rely on positive [1] and negative [2] controlled Toffoli gates. In this paper work we explore BDD based synthesis technique along with evolutionary computation method. We employed Fredkin and elementary CNOT gate library. Experimental results demonstrate that this approach reduces the gate count and quantum cost at the cost of increase in the number of lines.

Synthesis of Reversible and Quantum Circuit Using ROCBDD and Mixed-Polarity Toffoli Gate

Hieu Nguyen, Linh Hoang Tran

In the last decade, the synthesis of reversible logic circuits has become a trending topic because of its future necessity and importance. Many methods have been studied and proposed, for instance, transformation-based, search-based, cycle-based, ESOP-based and BDD-based methods. Each of them has its limitation related to time processing, ancilla and garbage line, quantum cost. This study develops an algorithm that could synthesize quantum circuits based on mixed-polarity Toffoli gate and a variant of binary decision diagram (BDD) called reduced-ordered-complemented edge-bdd (ROCBDD). It is an optimized method of BDD to reduce nodes in the representation of Boolean functions, which leads to adding more lines and quantum gates in the reversible circuit. First, the differences between synthesis using ROCBDD, the traditional BDD and others methods are introduced. Then, we define a new structure consisting of mixed-polarity Toffoli gates relied on nodes of ROCBDD. An efficient algorithm to match BDD representation to the reversible logic circuit is also mentioned. Finally, the experimental results show that our algorithm has better synthesizing costs than previous BDD-based methods.

Reversible Logic Circuit Synthesis and Optimization Using Adaptive Genetic Algorithm

Trailokya Nath Sasamal, Ashutosh Kumar Singh, Anand Mohan

In the recent years reversible logic circuits have gained a remarkable interest in the light of advancements made in quantum computation. The promise of theoretically zero power consumption is a major driving force for researchers to develop circuits using this logic. Synthesis of reversible logic and generating reversible logic circuit automatically with lower cost always has been a challenging task as reducing the search space is one of the major issues in the synthesis process using permutation. In this work, we proposed an Adaptive Genetic Algorithm (AGA) for synthesizing reversible logic circuits. NCT (NOT, CNOT, Toffoli) gate based library has been considered for synthesis of reversible logic circuits (RLC). The proposed algorithm produces a cascade of Toffoli gates for a given reversible specification of a circuit. Comparison of experimental results for several benchmark circuits shows that proposed evolutionary algorithm enables optimal or near-optimal solutions with lesser Gate Counts.

Fredkin-Enabled Transformation-Based Reversible Logic Synthesis

Mathias Soeken, Anupam Chattopadhyay

Reversible computation is gaining increasing relevance in the context of several post-CMOS technologies, the most prominent of those being quantum computing. The problem of implementing a given Boolean function using a set of elementary reversible logic gates is known as reversible logic synthesis. Due to the presumed hardness of the reversible circuit synthesis problem, different heuristics have been proposed in the literature to reduce quantum cost (QC), gate count, and logical depth without using ancillary lines. Interestingly, none of these heuristics systematically utilize Fredkin gates. In this paper, we demonstrate, both theoretically and empirically, that accommodating Fredkin gates significantly improves the performance of reversible circuits.

A Swarm based Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) Reordering Optimizer for Reversible Circuit Synthesis

Baker K. Abdalhaq, Ahmed Awad, Amjad Hawash

Reversible logic has been considered as a promising direction in the field of low power design and quantum computing. However, synthesizing reversible circuits is totally different from that of irreversible circuits. Therefore, several algorithms have been devoted to optimize the synthesis process of reversible circuits in terms of the Quantum Cost (QC). Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) based synthesis has been found as one of the dominant algorithms in reversible logic synthesis, due to its scalability in synthesizing large-scale circuits within a reasonable synthesis time that is bounded by the BDD size. However, the QC of the synthesized circuit is strongly correlated with the used BDD size in the synthesis process, wherein, each BDD node is substituted by a cascade or reversible gates. As a result, exploiting effective BDD reordering algorithms combined with BDD reduction rules turns out into less QC. In this paper, we propose a BDD reordering methodology wherein recently published swarm based optimization algorithms are integrated and compared in terms of the resultant BDD size. Experimental results show that Moth-Flame optimization (MFO) algorithm outperforms other algorithms on the public benchmarks.

Heuristic Synthesis of Reversible Logic – A Comparative Study

Chua Shin Cheng, Ashutosh Kumar Singh

Reversible logic circuits have been historically motivated by theoretical research in low-power, and recently attracted interest as components of the quantum algorithm, optical computing and nanotechnology. However due to the intrinsic property of reversible logic, traditional irreversible logic design and synthesis methods cannot be carried out. Thus a new set of algorithms are developed correctly to synthesize reversible logic circuit. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review with comparative study on heuristic based reversible logic synthesis. It reviews a range of heuristic based reversible logic synthesis techniques reported by researchers (BDD-based, cycle-based, search-based, non-search-based, rule-based, transformation-based, and ESOP-based). All techniques are described in detail and summarized in a table based on their features, limitation, library used and their consideration metric. Benchmark comparison of gate count and quantum cost are analysed for each synthesis technique. Comparing the synthesis algorithm outputs over the years, it can be observed that different approach has been used for the synthesis of reversible circuit. However, the improvements are not significant. Quantum cost and gate count has improved over the years, but arguments and debates are still on certain issues such as the issue of garbage outputs that remain the same. This paper provides the information of all heuristic based synthesis of reversible logic method proposed over the years. All techniques are explained in detail and thus informative for new reversible logic researchers and bridging the knowledge gap in this area.

Reversible Circuit Synthesis Method Using Sub-graphs of Shared Functional Decision Diagrams

Dengli Bu, Junyi Deng, Pengjie Tang +1 more

Abstract Reversible circuit synthesis methods based on decision diagrams achieve low quantum costs but do not account for quantum bit (qubit) limits for the application of reversible logic in quantum computing. Here, a synthesis method using sub-graphs of shared functional decision diagrams (SFDDs) is proposed for reducing the number of lines when synthesizing reversible circuits. An SFDD is partitioned into sub-graphs by exploiting the longest dominant-active paths, and the sub-graphs are mapped to reversible gate cascades. To further reduce the number of lines, template root matching is presented for reusing circuit lines. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method achieves the known minimum number of lines in many cases and has good scalability. Although the proposed method increases the quantum cost over a prior method based on functional decision diagrams, it significantly reduces the number of lines in most cases. Compared with the one-pass method using quantum multiple-valued decision diagrams, the proposed method reduces the quantum cost without increasing the number of lines in many cases. When compared with the lookup table-based method using a direct mapping flow, the method reduces the number of lines in a few cases. Thus, the method aids in the physical realization of a quantum circuit.
