Phase-controlled and chaos-assisted or -suppressed quantum entanglement for a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Chao Kong, Xiaobing Luo, Hao Chen +2 more

It has been demonstrated that the presence of chaos may lead to greater entanglement generation for some physical systems. Here, we find different effects of chaos on the spin-motion entanglement for a two-frequency driven Bose-Einstein condensate with spin-orbit coupling. We analytically and numerically demonstrate that classical chaos can assist or suppress entanglement generation, depending on the initial phase differences between two motional states, which can be manipulated by using the known phase-engineering method. The results could be significant in engineering nonlinear dynamics for quantum information processing with many-body entanglement.

Enhancing von Neumann entropy by chaos in spin–orbit entanglement*

Chen-Rong Liu, Pei Yu, Xianzhang Chen +3 more

For a quantum system with multiple degrees of freedom or subspaces, loss of coherence in a certain subspace is intimately related to the enhancement of entanglement between this subspace and another one. We investigate intra-particle entanglement in two-dimensional mesoscopic systems, where an electron has both spin and orbital degrees of freedom and the interaction between them is enabled by Rashba type of spin–orbit coupling. The geometric shape of the scattering region can be adjusted to produce a continuous spectrum of classical dynamics with different degree of chaos. Focusing on the spin degree of freedom in the weak spin–orbit coupling regime, we find that classical chaos can significantly enhance spin–orbit entanglement at the expense of spin coherence. Our finding that classical chaos can be beneficial to intra-particle entanglement may have potential applications such as enhancing the bandwidth of quantum communications.

Entanglement across a transition to quantum chaos

Carlos Mejía-Monasterio, Giuliano Benenti, Gabriel G. Carlo +1 more

We study the relation between entanglement and quantum chaos in one- and two-dimensional spin-$1∕2$ lattice models, which exhibit mixing of the noninteracting eigenfunctions and transition from integrability to quantum chaos. Contrary to what occurs in a quantum phase transition, the onset of quantum chaos is not a property of the ground state but takes place for any typical many-spin quantum state. We study bipartite and pairwise entanglement measures---namely, the reduced von Neumann entropy and the concurrence---and discuss quantum entanglement sharing. Our results suggest that the behavior of the entanglement is related to the mixing of the eigenfunctions rather than to the transition to chaos.
