Spin orientation of metastable He/sup 4/ atoms in collisions with optically oriented cesium atoms

Abstract

Cs atoms were optically oriented by circularly polarized light from a Cs lamp. He/sup 4/ atoms in the 2/sup 3/S, state underwent Penning collisions with these atoms and the resulting spin orientation was observed. (AIP)

Observation of the spin polarization of Cs atoms during collisions with oriented metastable helium atoms

Victor A. Kartoshkin, Sergei Dmitriev, N. A. Dovator +1 more

We are the first to experimentally observe a magnetic resonance signal of 6 2 S 1/2 Cs atoms by absorption of light from a helium lamp that was used to optically orient metastable 2 3 S 1 He atoms. The amplitude of the cesium signal proved to be almost three orders of magnitude lower than the amplitude of the magnetic resonance of 2 3 S 1 He atoms. The theoretical explanation of the effect is presented.

Observation of the spin polarization of Cs atoms during optical orientation of metastable helium atoms in alkali-helium plasma

Sergei P. Dmitriev, N. A. Dovator, Victor A. Kartoshkin +1 more

We are the first to experimentally observe a magnetic-resonance signal of 62 S 1/2 Cs atoms by absorption of light from a helium lamp that was used to optically orient metastable 23 S 1 He atoms. The amplitude of the cesium signal proved to be almost three orders of magnitude lower than the amplitude of the magnetic resonance of 23 S 1 He atoms. Particular features of the creation and observation of the collisional polarization of cesium under conditions of alkali-helium plasma have been discussed.

Orientation of (He4)+ Ions by Exchange Collisions with Cesium Atoms

HANS G. DEHMELT, F. G. Major

Polarization of trapped (He/sup 4/)/sup +/ ions was demonstrated by observing low-field Zeeman transitions. Creation and monitoring of the ions are described. The orientation and monitoring were accomplished by bombarding the trapped ions with a beam of optically oriented Cs atoms. Spin exchange and charge capture are described. (L.N.N.)

Spin polarization of 85Rb atoms in collisions with optically oriented metastable 4He atoms in alkali–helium plasma

Sergei P. Dmitriev, N. A. Dovator, Victor A. Kartoshkin

We have experimentally detected a signal of magnetic resonance (MR) from 85Rb atoms in the 52 S 1/2 state by measuring the absorption of light from a helium lamp producing optical orientation of metastable 23 S 1 4He atoms in a cell containing alkali metal vapor and gaseous helium at a pressure of 1 Torr. The ratio of MR signal amplitudes in Rb and He atoms did not exceed 10–2. Peculiarities of the formation and observation of the collisional polarization of Rb atoms in alkali–helium plasma are discussed.

Optically pumped atomic spin orientation and the law of mass action for 2Cs⇄Cs2

J. J. Ho, Chongye Wang, Robert A. Bernheim

The effect of optically pumped atomic spin orientation on the atom–dimer equilibrium in cesium vapor has been observed. Such a shift in equilibrium was predicted over two decades ago and is due to the redistribution of spin-determined bonding and antibonding collision trajectories. Orientation of the total spin angular momentum of 6 2S1/2 ground state Cs atoms in the vapor phase was produced by optical pumping with a tunable cw dye laser. A decrease in the equilibrium molecular density resulted and was measured using laser induced fluorescence from the B 1Πu state. The shift in equilibrium is a function of the degree of atomic orientation and could be observed in the temperature range 383–421 K for cesium vapor in a glass cell which also contained a He–N2 buffer gas mixture with a composition ratio of 9:1.

Observation of Spontaneous Spin Polarization in an Optically Pumped Cesium Vapor

W. M. Klipstein, S. K. Lamoreaux, E. Norval Fortson

We have observed spontaneous atomic spin polarization of a Cs vapor undergoing rapid spin exchange in a cell when illuminated with plane-polarized 894 nm ( $D$1) light. The spin polarization shows marked hysteresis in switching between two stable orientations, fully aligned parallel or antiparallel to an external magnetic field, as the circular polarization of the pump light is varied about zero. We show that our observations agree with theoretical expectations and point out possible applications of spontaneous polarization.
