Fano Resonance in Landau Fermi and Luttinger Liquids

Abstract

With a two-channel model, we study the influence of temperature, external voltage and magnetic flux on the line shape of the Fano resonance, and show that in the Luttinger liquid case, the background transmittance and the asymmetric parameter depend strongly on the temperature and external voltage, while for the Landau Fermi liquid case they are nearly independent of these parameters in the low energy region. Moreover, we demonstrate that the asymmetric parameter changes periodically with an external magnetic flux, which is consistent with the recent experimental data.

Resonant tunneling in a Luttinger liquid

Akira Furusaki, Naoto Nagaosa

The resonant tunneling through a double-barrier structure in a one-dimensional system of interacting spinless fermions is studied. The conductance is calculated as a function of gate voltage and temperature. It is shown that even in Luttinger liquids the line shape of resonances is almost the same as that of the noninteracting Fermi liquid provided that the temperature is not too low. The temperature dependence, on the other hand, is drastically changed by the interaction, and the height of the conductance peak is a nonmonotonic function of temperature for weak repulsive interaction.

Transport in a Luttinger liquid with dissipation: Two impurities

Leiming Chen, Zoran Ristivojević, Thomas Nattermann

We consider theoretically the transport in a one-channel spinless Luttinger liquid with two strong impurities in the presence of dissipation. As a difference with respect to the dissipation free case, where the two impurities fully transmit electrons at resonance points, the dissipation prevents complete transmission in the present situation. A rich crossover diagram for the conductance as a function of applied voltage, temperature, dissipation strength, Luttinger liquid parameter $K$, and the deviation from the resonance condition is obtained. For weak dissipation and $1/2<K<1$, the conduction shows a nonmonotonic increase as a function of temperature or voltage. For strong dissipation the conduction increases monotonically but is exponentially small.

Functional renormalization group study of parallel double quantum dots: Effects of asymmetric dot-lead couplings

V. S. Protsenko, A. A. Katanin

We explore the effects of asymmetry of hopping parameters between double parallel quantum dots and the leads on the conductance and a possibility of local magnetic moment formation in this system using functional renormalization group approach with the counterterm. We demonstrate a possibility of a quantum phase transition to a local moment regime [so-called singular Fermi liquid (SFL) state] for various types of hopping asymmetries and discuss respective gate voltage dependencies of the conductance. We show that, depending on the type of the asymmetry, the system can demonstrate either a first-order quantum phase transition to an SFL state, accompanied by a discontinuous change of the conductance, similarly to the symmetric case, or the second-order quantum phase transition, in which the conductance is continuous and exhibits Fano-type asymmetric resonance near the transition point. A semianalytical explanation of these different types of conductance behavior is presented.

Fractional charge in the noise of Luttinger liquid systems (Invited Paper)

Björn Trauzettel, Inès Safi A, Fabrizio Dolcini +1 more

The current noise of a voltage biased interacting quantum wire adiabatically connected to metallic leads is computed in presence of an impurity in the wire. We find that in the weak backscattering limit the Fano factor characterizing the ratio between shot noise and backscattering current crucially depends on the noise frequency relative to the ballistic frequency vF/gL, where vF is the Fermi velocity, g the Luttinger liquid interaction parameter, and L the length of the wire. In contrast to chiral Luttinger liquids, the noise is not only due to the Poissonian backscattering of fractionally charged quasiparticles at the impurity, but also depends on Andreev-type reflections of plasmons at the contacts, so that the frequency dependence of the noise needs to be analyzed to extract the fractional charge of the bulk excitations. We show that the frequencies needed to see interaction effects in the Fano factor are within experimental reach.

Local spectral weight of a Luttinger liquid: Effects from edges and impurities

Paata Kakashvili, Henrik Johannesson, Sebastian Eggert

We calculate the finite-temperature local spectral weight (LSW) of a Luttinger liquid with an ``open'' (hard-wall) boundary. Close to the boundary the LSW exhibits characteristic oscillations indicative of spin-charge separation. The line shape of the LSW is also found to have a Fano-like asymmetry, a feature originating from the interplay between electron-electron interaction and scattering off the boundary. Our results can be used to predict how edges and impurities influence scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of one-dimensional electron systems at low temperatures and voltage bias. Applications to STM on single-walled carbon nanotubes are discussed.
