Dense coding for continuous variables

Samuel L. Braunstein, Harry J. Kimble

A scheme to achieve dense quantum coding for the quadrature amplitudes of the electromagnetic field is presented. The protocol utilizes shared entanglement provided by nondegenerate parametric down-conversion in the limit of large gain to attain high efficiency. For a constraint in the mean number of photons $\mathrm{n\ifmmode \bar{}\else \={}\fi{}}$ associated with modulation in the signal channel, the channel capacity for dense coding is found to be $\mathrm{ln}(1+\mathrm{n\ifmmode \bar{}\else \={}\fi{}}+{n}^{2}),$ which always beats coherent-state communication and surpasses squeezed-state communication for $\mathrm{n\ifmmode \bar{}\else \={}\fi{}}>1.$ For $\mathrm{n\ifmmode \bar{}\else \={}\fi{}}\ensuremath{\gg}1,$ the dense coding capacity approaches twice that of either scheme.

Orbital Angular Momentum Multiplexed Quantum Dense Coding

Yingxuan Chen, Shengshuai Liu, Yanbo Lou +1 more

To beat the channel capacity limit of conventional quantum dense coding (QDC) with fixed quantum resources, we experimentally implement the orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexed QDC (MQDC) in a continuous variable system based on a four-wave mixing process. First, we experimentally demonstrate that the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement source coded on OAM modes can be used in a single channel to realize the QDC scheme. Then, we implement the OAM MQDC scheme by using the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement source coded on OAM superposition modes. In the end, we make an explicit comparison of channel capacities for four different schemes and find that the channel capacity of the OAM MQDC scheme is substantially enhanced compared to the conventional QDC scheme without multiplexing. The channel capacity of our OAM MQDC scheme can be further improved by increasing the squeezing parameter and the number of multiplexed OAM modes in the channel. Our results open an avenue to construct high-capacity quantum communication networks.

The classical capacity of a quantum dense coding system

Masashi Ban, Sachiko Kitajima, Fumiaki Shibata

Quantum dense coding transmits classical information by sending a quantum system with the assistance of quantum entanglement. The classical information capacity of a quantum dense coding system is obtained, where a sender and receiver share a completely entangled state and a quantum system encoded by applying unitary operators is sent through an arbitrary quantum channel. The result is compared with that obtained in another setting.
