Abstract

We study the antiferromagnetic phase of three-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest neighbors hopping on a bipartite cubic lattice. We use the quantum SU(2)×U(1) rotor approach that yields a fully self-consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state that respects the symmetry properties of the model and satisfies the Mermin-Wagner theorem. As our theory describes the evolution from a Slater (U t) to a Mott-Heisenberg (U t) antiferromagnet, we present the phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Hubbard model as a function of the crossover parameter U/t.

Néel order in the Hubbard model within a spin-charge rotating reference frame approach: Crossover from weak to strong coupling

T. A. Zaleski, T. K. Kopeć

The antiferromagnetic phase of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Hubbard model with nearest neighbor hopping is studied on a bipartite cubic lattice by means of the quantum $\mathrm{SU}(2)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{U}(1)$ rotor approach that yields a fully self-consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state that respects the symmetry properties of the model and satisfy the Mermin-Wagner theorem. The collective variables for charge and spin are isolated in the form of the space-time fluctuating U(1) phase field and rotating spin-quantization axis governed by the SU(2) symmetry, respectively. As a result interacting electrons appear as composite objects consisting of bare fermions with attached U(1) and SU(2) gauge fields. An effective action consisting of a spin-charge rotor and a fermionic field is derived as a function of the Coulomb repulsion $U$ and hopping parameter $t$. At zero temperature, our theory describes the evolution from a Slater $(U⪡t)$ to a Mott-Heisenberg $(U⪢t)$ antiferromagnet. The results for zero-temperature sublatice magnetization (2D) and finite temperature (3D) phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Hubbard model as a function of the crossover parameter $U∕t$ are presented and the role of the spin Berry phase in the interaction driven crossover is analyzed.

Néel order and the destruction of localized magnetic moments in the crossover from the Mott–Heisenberg to the Slater limit

Abstract We study the antiferromagnetic phase of the three‐dimensional (3D) Hubbard model with nearest‐neighbor hopping on a bipartite cubic lattice. We use the quantum SU(2) × U(1) rotor approach that yields a fully self‐consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state that respects the symmetry properties of the model and satisfies the Mermin–Wagner theorem. As our theory describes the evolution from a Slater (U ≪ t) to a Mott–Heisenberg (U ≫ t) antiferromagnet, we present the phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Hubbard model as a function of the crossover parameter U/t.

Antiferromagnetic phase in the Hubbard model by means of the composite operator method

Adolfo Avella, Ferdinando Mancini, Roland Münzner

We have investigated the antiferromagnetic phase of two-dimensional (2D), three-dimensional (3D), and extended Hubbard models on a bipartite cubic lattice by means of the composite operator method within a two-pole approximation. This approach yields a fully self-consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state that respects the symmetry properties of both the model and the algebra. The complete phase diagram, as regards the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, has been drawn. We first reported, within a pole approximation, three kinds of transitions at half-filling: Mott-Hubbard, Mott-Heisenberg, and Heisenberg transitions. We have also found a metal-insulator transition, driven by doping, within the antiferromagnetic phase. This latter is restricted to a very small region near half-filling, and has, in contrast to what has been found by similar approaches, a finite critical Coulomb interaction as a lower bound at half-filling. Finally, it is worth noting that our antiferromagnetic gap has two independent components: one due to the antiferromagnetic correlations, and another coming from the Mott-Hubbard mechanism.

Phase diagram of the half-filled extended Hubbard model in two dimensions

Biplab Chattopadhyay, D. M. Gaitonde

We consider an extended Hubbard model of interacting fermions on a lattice. The fermion kinetic energy corresponds to a tight-binding Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor (-t) and next-nearest-neighbor (${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$) hopping matrix elements. In addition to the on-site Hubbard interaction (U) we also consider a nearest-neighbor repulsion (V). We obtain the zero-temperature phase diagram of our model within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We consider ground states having charge- and spin-density-wave ordering as well as states with orbital antiferromagnetism or spin nematic order. The latter two states correspond to particle-hole binding with ${\mathrm{d}}_{{\mathrm{x}}^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{y}}^{2}}$ symmetry in the charge and spin channels, respectively. For ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$=0, only the charge-density-wave and spin-density-wave states are energetically stable. For nonzero ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$, we find that orbital antiferromagnetism (or spin nematic) order is stable over a finite portion of the phase diagram at weak coupling. This region of stability is seen to grow with increasing values of ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$.

Symmetries and mean-field phases of the extended Hubbard model

Anders B. Eriksson, Torbjörn Einarsson, Stellan S. Ostlund

The two-dimensional extended Hubbard model that includes a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interaction is studied using a mean-field theory where quasiparticles are defined by an U(8) group of canonical transformations permitting both broken gauge, spin, and sublattice symmetry. The theory is further extended to incorporate a possible twist in the spin-quantization axis, so that the competition between superconductivity, charge density waves, and N\'eel and spiral antiferromagnetic order can be monitored within one single theory. Our results for positive Hubbard U and Heisenberg exchange J suggest that antiferromagnetic ordering dominates close to half-filling, while spiral states and d-wave superconductivity compete when doping is introduced. For moderate values of J, we find a phase diagram where a phase transition occurs from an antiferromagnet to a d-wave superconductor as doping is increased. A narrow region of (s+id)-wave superconductor is found for some values of J and U.

Antiferromagnetism in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice: A two-particle self-consistent study

S. Arya, P. V. Sriluckshmy, Syed R. Hassan +1 more

The semimetal to antiferromagnet quantum phase transition of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice has come to the forefront in the context of the proposal that a semimetal to spin liquid transition can occur before the transition to the antiferromagnetic phase. To study the semimetal to antiferromagnet transition, we generalize the two-particle self-consistent (TPSC) approach to the honeycomb lattice (a structure that can be realized in graphene for example). We show that the critical interaction strength where the transition occurs is ${U}_{c}/t=3.79\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01$, quite close to the value ${U}_{c}/t=3.869\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.013$ reported using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This reinforces the conclusion that the semimetal to spin-liquid transition is preempted by the transition to the antiferromagnet. Since TPSC satisfies the Mermin-Wagner theorem, we find temperature-dependent results for the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic correlation lengths as well as the dependence of double occupancy and of the renormalized spin and charge interactions on the bare interaction strength. We also estimate the value of the crossover temperature to the renormalized classical regime as a function of interaction strength.
