Simulation of the quantum Hall effect in a staggered modulated magnetic field with ultracold atoms

Fuxiang Li, L. B. Shao, Li Sheng +1 more

With ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, we propose an experimental scheme to simulate and detect the integer quantum Hall effect and a peculiar phase transition in a uniform magnetic field and an additional staggered magnetic field. The phase transition is characterized by the direct change from Hall plateau state $N\ensuremath{-}1$ to $\ensuremath{-}1$ due to Chern number redistribution when the staggered magnetic field is varied. We propose the possibility to observe the Hall conductivity and the phase transition by varying experimental parameters and measuring the number density of the ultracold atoms.

Anomalous Hall effect with ultracold gases

Omjyoti Dutta, Anna Przysiężna, Jakub Zakrzewski

Ultracold atoms in optical lattices serve as a tool to model different physical phenomena appearing originally in condensed matter. To study magnetic phenomena one needs to engineer synthetic fields as atoms are neutral. Appropriately shaped optical potentials force atoms to mimic charged particles moving in a given field. We present the realization of artificial gauge fields for the observation of anomalous Hall effect. Two species of attractively interacting ultracold fermions are considered to be trapped in a shaken two dimensional triangular lattice. A combination of interaction induced tunneling and shaking can result in an emergent Dice lattice. In such a lattice the staggered synthetic magnetic flux appears and it can be controlled with external parameters. The obtained synthetic fields are non-Abelian. Depending on the tuning of the staggered flux we can obtain either anomalous Hall effect or its quantized version. Our results are reminiscent of Anomalous Hall conductivity in spin-orbit coupled ferromagnets.

Spin-Orbit Coupling and Berry Phase with Ultracold Atoms in 2D Optical Lattices

Artem M. Dudarev, Roberto B. Diener, Iacopo Carusotto +1 more

We show how spin-orbit coupling and Berry phase can appear in two-dimensional optical lattices by coupling atoms' internal degrees of freedom to radiation. The Rashba Hamiltonian, a standard description of spin-orbit coupling for two-dimensional electrons, is obtained for the atoms under certain circumstances. We discuss the possibility of observing associated phenomena, such as the anomalous Hall and spin Hall effects, with cold atoms in optical lattices.
