Motivated by recent numerical and experimental studies of the spin-
1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice, we formulate a many-body model for fermionic spinons introduced by us earlier [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 187203 (2009)]. The spinons interact with an emergent
U(1) gauge field and experience strong short-range attraction in the
S=0 channel. The ground state of the model is generically a
Z2 liquid. We calculate the edge of the two-spinon continuum and compare the theory to the slave-fermion approach to the Heisenberg model.
A spin-[Formula: see text] lattice Heisenberg Kagome antiferromagnet (KAFM) is a prototypical frustrated quantum magnet, which exhibits exotic quantum spin liquids that evade long-range magnetic order due to the interplay between quantum fluctuation and geometric frustration. So far, the main focus has remained on the ground-state properties; however, the theoretical consensus regarding the magnetic excitations is limited. Here, we study the dynamic spin structure factor (DSSF) of the KAFM by means of the density matrix renormalization group. By comparison with the well-defined magnetically ordered state and the chiral spin liquid sitting nearby in the phase diagram, the KAFM with nearest neighbor interactions shows distinct dynamical responses. The DSSF displays important spectral intensity predominantly in the low-frequency region around the [Formula: see text] point in momentum space and shows a broad spectral distribution in the high-frequency region for momenta along the boundary of the extended Brillouin zone. The excitation continuum identified from momentum- and energy-resolved DSSF signals emergent spinons carrying fractional quantum numbers. These results capture the main observations in the inelastic neutron scattering measurements of herbertsmithite and indicate the spin liquid nature of the ground state. By tracking the DSSF across quantum-phase transition between the chiral spin liquid and the magnetically ordered phase, we identify the condensation of two-spinon bound state driving the quantum-phase transition.
We investigate the spin-
21 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on kagome lattice, making use of the variational Monte Carlo technique. An exotic quantum spin state is found to arise from a melting of the $\mathbit{Q}=0$ long-range magnetic order by a topological transition, when a small anisotropic third-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction is turned on. This state is a gapped quantum spin liquid, characterized by a topological order with ground-state degeneracy
ng=4 and topological entanglement entropy $\ensuremath{\gamma}=ln2$, suggesting it is an Abelian topological phase. Furthermore, the Chern numbers of the spin-up (-down) spinon occupied bands of this state are ${C}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, respectively. From this perspective, this state is also a time-reversal symmetric (total Chern number
Ctotal=0) topological insulator with spinons as the chiral edge states, which carry opposite spin and move in the opposite direction. It is analogous to the quantum spin Hall state but the spin current is carried by deconfined spinons in a quantum spin liquid, and so is dubbed as the spinon quantum spin Hall state.
