Evidence of a spin liquid with hard-core bosons in a square lattice

Y-H Chan, L-M Duan

We show that laser-assisted hopping of hard-core bosons in a square optical lattice can be described by an antiferromagnetic J 1 – J 2 XY model with a tunable ratio of J 2 / J 1 . We numerically investigated the phase diagram of the J 1 – J 2 XY model using both the tensor network algorithm for infinite systems and the exact diagonalization for small clusters and found strong evidence that in the intermediate region around J 2 / J 1 ∼ 0.5, there is a spin liquid phase with vanishing magnetization and valence bond orders, which interconnects the Néel state on the J 2 ≪ J 1 side and the stripe antiferromagnetic phase on the J 2 ≫ J 1 side. This finding opens up the possibility of studying the exotic spin liquid phase in a realistic experimental system using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice.

Interacting Ultracold Bosonic Atoms in Geometrically Frustrated Lattices

Tsz Him Leung

Geometric frustration is a phenomenon where local energy constraints cannot be simultaneously satisfied because of geometric reasons. This leads to a manifold of degenerate ground states in which ordering can be highly nontrivial and exotic phases of matter could emerge. In a kagome lattice, both interaction energies of spins and kinetic energies of particles can be frustrated. In the latter case, a single-particle band structure with a flat (dispersionless) energy band results. In this dissertation, we report our experimental studies of interacting bosonic systems in kagome lattices. Such studies are performed with a quantum simulator based on ultracold atoms in optical lattices. We describe upgrades and development of the apparatus that constructs optical kagome lattices in our experiment. We briefly discuss results of an experiment studying the Bose-Hubbard model in a trimerized kagome lattice. We then report the details of an experiment investigating the interplay of kinetic frustration and interactions by probing the band structure of an optical kagome lattice with interacting ultracold bosonic atoms. Finally, we propose experimental ideas for exploring the properties of the singular band touching point in the kagome flat band.

Competing exotic quantum phases of spin- 12 ultracold lattice bosons with extended spin interactions

Advances in pure optical trapping techniques now allow the creation of degenerate Bose gases with internal degrees of freedom. Systems such as $^{87}\mathrm{Rb},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{39}\mathrm{K}$, or $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ in the $F=1$ hyperfine state offer an ideal platform for studying the interplay of superfluidity and quantum magnetism. Motivated by the experimental developments, we study ground-state phases of a two-component Bose gas loaded on an optical lattice. The system is described effectively by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with on-site and near-neighbor spin-spin interactions. An important feature of our investigation is the inclusion of interconversion (spin-flip) terms between the two species, which has been observed in optical lattice experiments. Using mean-field theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we map out the phase diagram of the system. A rich variety of phases is identified, including antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulators and ferromagnetic and AF superfluids.
