Abstract

The master equation for the nonresonant operation of inhomogeneously broadened two‐transition laser is derived from the density matrix equation of motion. Operation characteristics are calculated from the steady state solution of the master equation and are compared with those of a one‐transition laser. It is shown that the two‐transition laser operation has a number of advantages.

Off-resonance operation of inhomogeneously broadened two-photon lasers

S. G. Sun, D. L. Lin, Xiao-shen Li

We generalize Lamb's quantum theory of lasers to treat the off-resonance operation of two-transition lasers in inhomogeneously broadened media. The master equation is derived from the density-matrix equation of motion in the Doppler limit. We first find the stationary-state solution from which we then obtain such operation characteristics as the threshold condition, the mean photon number, and the half-width of photon distribution. Compared with the one-transition laser, it is found that in the two-transition laser it is much easier to start oscillation and to obtain higher gain. Furthermore, we find that the two-transition laser is less sensitive to the detuning effect and its deviation from the coherent state is smaller than that of the one-transition laser. The remarkably different hole-burning phenomenon is also discussed.

Photon number distributions for an inhomogeneously broadened laser with an absorber

Mansour Mortazavi, Surendra Singh

An equation of motion for the density matrix of the field of an inhomogeneously broadened single-mode laser containing a saturable absorber is derived. Using the photon number representation this equation is solved in the steady state. High-intensity photon number distributions are obtained for the on-resonance operation of the laser. Off-resonance operation is also considered. Curves are presented to illustrate the behavior, and the results are compared with earlier investigations.

Off-resonant operation of a double-transition single-mode laser

Sun Son-gen, Xiao-shen Li, Nianyu Bei

Scully and Lamb's quantum theory of the laser is extended to deal with nonresonant operation of a single-mode laser in a homogeneously broadened medium consisting of three-level atoms. In the case of weak-field intensity, the master equation and operation characters such as the threshold condition, the average photon number, and the half-width of the photon distribution are obtained and discussed.

Three-mode laser action in an inhomogeneously broadened medium

Shanting Hu

Lamb's quantum theory of lasers is extended to deal with the three-mode laser operation in an in homogeneously broadened solid medium consisting of four-level atoms. The master equation, the operation characteristics and the line-width of the three-mode laser are obtained and discussed. The relevant experimental result is explained and effects of inhomogeneous broadening are studied.

The quantum theory of a three-mode laser

Xiao-shen Li

The density operator theory and method are used to extend the fully quantum-mechanical theory of the two-level single-mode laser advanced by Sargent, Scully and Lamb (1974) to the homogeneously broadened four-level atomic system so that the master equation of the three-mode laser operation for this system is obtained. The steady-state operation characteristics of the laser in different cases are discussed and compared. Especially, pictorial comparison and discussion of the quantum-statistical properties of the laser are carried out by means of numerical computation. Meanwhile some experimental results obtained by Otsuka (1978) are qualitatively explained.

Solutions of the master equation of two-mode lasers

X Li, W Cai, Roberta Marani +1 more

The master equation for a two-mode laser operating off-resonantly in a three-level medium has been solved numerically in the steady-state regime. It is found that due to strong correlation effects the laser can undergo a mode-competition process before the two modes anomalously support mutually. The formal parameter H introduced by Chu and Su (1982) has been calculated and found to behave quite differently from what was estimated. Therefore, neglecting the correlations may lead to loss of important information about the operation properties.
