Finite-time quantum-to-classical transition for a Schrödinger-cat state

Janika Paavola, Michael J. W. Hall, Matteo G. A. Paris +1 more

The transition from quantum to classical, in the case of a quantum harmonic oscillator, is typically identified with the transition from a quantum superposition of macroscopically distinguishable states, such as the Schr\"odinger-cat state, into the corresponding statistical mixture. This transition is commonly characterized by the asymptotic loss of the interference term in the Wigner representation of the cat state. In this paper we show that the quantum-to-classical transition has different dynamical features depending on the measure for nonclassicality used. Measures based on an operatorial definition have well-defined physical meaning and allow a deeper understanding of the quantum-to-classical transition. Our analysis shows that, for most nonclassicality measures, the Schr\"odinger-cat state becomes classical after a finite time. Moreover, our results challenge the prevailing idea that more macroscopic states are more susceptible to decoherence in the sense that the transition from quantum to classical occurs faster. Since nonclassicality is a prerequisite for entanglement generation our results also bridge the gap between decoherence, which is lost only asymptotically, and entanglement, which may show a ``sudden death.'' In fact, whereas the loss of coherences still remains asymptotic, we emphasize that the transition from quantum to classical can indeed occur at a finite time.

Gaussian channels that are eventually entanglement breaking yet asymptotically nonclassicality saving

Sagnik Garai, J. Solomon Ivan

A complete classification of single-mode bosonic Gaussian channels on the basis of being quantum-limited or entanglement breaking under $n$-fold composition is obtained. Parametric forms for all single-mode bosonic Gaussian channels that remain quantum-limited under $n$-fold composition is obtained. It is shown that the obtained parametric forms of quantum-limited amplifier, attenuator, and singular noise channels are entanglement saving, i.e., they do not break entanglement under finite $n$-fold composition. All other single-mode bosonic Gaussian channels, quantum limited or not, are shown to be eventually entanglement breaking. Nonclassicality breaking under multiple composition of a single-mode bosonic Gaussian channel is also studied. We outline a family of single-mode bosonic Gaussian channels that are eventually entanglement breaking, but asymptotically nonclassicality saving. We illustrate examples of channels that are eventually nonclassicality breaking, asymptotically nonclassicality breaking, and asymptotically nonclassicality saving.

Attractors and asymptotic dynamics of open discrete-time quantum walks on cycles

Adam S. Sajna, T. P. Polak, Antoni Wójcik +1 more

Open quantum walks often lead to a classical asymptotic behavior. Here we look for a simple open quantum walk whose asymptotic behavior can be nonclassical. We consider a discrete-time quantum walk on an $n$-cycle subject to a random coin-dependent phase shift at a single position. This finite system, whose evolution is described by only two Kraus operators, can exhibit all kinds of asymptotic behavior observable in quantum Markov chains: It either evolves towards a maximally mixed state, or partially mixed state, or tends to an oscillatory motion on an asymptotic orbit. We find that the asymptotic orbits do not have a product structure; therefore, the corresponding states can manifest entanglement between the position and the coin degrees of freedom, even if the system started in a product state.
