Abstract

We present the moments formalism theory to study the deflection of the slow signal light in the cold atomic media, which is under the condition of the Gaussian control laser and electromagnetically induced transparency.Deflection, the interesting phenomenon on quantum coherence, is testified by analytic and numerical methods. Results show that, as the signal light propagating in the medium, there would be an observable deflection before the general diffraction.Influences of the coupling intensity on deflection phenomenon and the beam waist of the signal light in the medium are also investigated.

Beam Splitting in Induced Inhomogeneous Media

Chunfang Wang, Yanfeng Bai, Hong-Ju Guo +1 more

We study the spatial behavior of a deflected beam in a coherent Λ-type three-level atomic medium with an inhomogeneous control laser. When the Rabi coupling by the control laser is in a Gaussian profile, the spatial-dependent refraction index of the atomic medium will result in a beam splitting as well as the deflection of the slow probe light under electromagnetically induced transparency. In terms of the phase difference between the two splitting beams and the position of the splitting, the possible interpretation of the splitting is given in theory.

Deflection of slow light by magneto-optically controlled atomic media

D. L. Zhou, Lan Zhou, R. Q. Wang +2 more

We present a semiclassical theory for light deflection by a coherent $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type three-level atomic medium in an inhomogeneous magnetic field or an inhomogeneous control laser. When the atomic energy levels (or the Rabi coupling by the control laser) are position-dependent due to the Zeeman effect caused by the inhomogeneous magnetic field (or due to inhomogeneity of the control field profile), the spatial dependence of the refraction index of the atomic medium will result in an observable deflection of slow signal light when the electromagnetically induced transparency cancels medium absorption. Our theoretical approach based on Fermat's principle in geometrical optics not only provides a consistent explanation for the most recent experiment in a straightforward way, but also predicts the two-photon detuning dependent behaviors and larger deflection angles by three orders of magnitude for the slow signal light deflection by the atomic media in an inhomogeneous off-resonant control laser field.

Deflection of slow light in a Stern-Gerlach magnetic field

Leon Karpa, Martin Weitz

Electromagnetically induced transparency allows for light transmission through dense atomic media by means of quantum interference of absorption amplitudes. Media exhibiting electromagnetically induced transparency have interesting properties, such as very slow group velocities. Associated with the slow light propagation are quasiparticles, so-called dark polaritons, which are mixtures of a photonic and an atomic contribution. Here, we demonstrate that these excitations behave as particles with a nonzero magnetic moment, which is in clear contrast to the properties of a free photon. It is found that circularily polarized light passing through a rubidium gas cell under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency is deflected by a small magnetic field gradient. The deflection angle is proportional to the propagation time of an optical pulse through the cell. The observed beam deflection can be understood by assuming that dark state polaritons have an effective magnetic moment. This is attributed to the spin wave contribution that develops upon entry of light into the medium. Our experiment can be described in terms of a Stern-Gerlach experiment for the dark polaritons.

Enhanced Deflection of Light Ray by Atomic Ensemble on Coherent Population Oscillation

Jing Lu, Zhou Lan, Kuang Le-Man

In recent experiments [e.g., Nature Physics 2 (2006) 332], the enhanced light deflection in an atomic ensemble due to inhomogeneous fields is demonstrated by the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) based mechanism. In this paper, we explore a different mechanism for the similar phenomenon of the enhanced light deflection. This mechanism is based on the coherent population oscillation, which leads to the hole burning in the absorption spectrum. The medium causing the deflection of probe light is an ensemble of two-level atoms manipulated by a strong controlled field on the two photon resonances. In the large detuning condition, the response of the medium to the pump field and signal field is obtained with steady state approximation. And it is found that after the probe field travels across the medium, the signal ray bends due to the spatial-dependent profile of the control beam.

Stationary and quasistationary light pulses in three-level cold atomic systems

Sergey A. Moiseev, A. I. Sidorova, Byoung Seung HAM

We have studied stationary and quasistationary signal light pulses in cold \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type atomic media driven by counterpropagating control laser fields at the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency. By deriving a dispersion relation we present spectral and temporal properties of the signal light pulse and a significant influence of atomic decoherence on the coupled stationary light pulses for spatial splitting. Finally we discuss quasistationary light pulse evolution characterized by frozen spatial spreading for a robust coherent control of slow light pulses.
