Short-range Correlations in Coupled Quantum-wire Systems

Abstract

We study the contact values of the inter-wire pair-correlation function in electron-electron and electron-hole double-wire systems. For this purpose the ladder approximation as generalized to multicomponent systems is used. The ladder approximation yields positive values for the inter-wire gee(0) and geh(0) for all values of the density parameter rs and distance d between the wires. This allows us to infer possible instabilities in the system more reliably compared to other approaches. We also investigate the effects of quantum-wire width and screening on the inter-wire pair-correlation functions.

Study of Electron-Hole Bi-Wire System Using Quantum Monte Carlo Method

Priya Namawat, Vinod Ashokan

Abstract In this work, the computational method of Variational Monte Carlo is used to study the ground state properties of electron-hole (e-h) bi-wire systems. We have calculated the pair correlation function and static structure factor of a coupled infinitely thin e-h wire system of electronic density (rs= 1) and inter-wire distance (d = 1). The numerical calculation is carried out using the many-body trial wave function of the Slater-Jastrow backflow type. It is observed that the inter-wire correlations become quite important in the case of the mass-symmetric electron-hole bi-wire system due to the coulomb attractive nature of the bi-wire system.

Pair-correlation function of the electron gas with long-range Coulomb interaction: Ladder theory

L. Calmels, Alfred Gold

We present analytical and numerical results for the pair-correlation function $g(r=0)$ of the electron gas with long-range Coulomb interaction obtained within the ladder theory. Analytical results obtained by perturbation calculation and a Pad\'e approximation are derived and are found to be in good agreement with our numerical solution of the ladder equation. Finite-width effects in the two-dimensional electron gas (quantum well) are also described. For quasi-one-dimensional systems (quantum wires) numerical and analytical results are derived for an oscillator confinement model.

Coupled charged Bose quantum wires

Rajinder Kumar Moudgil, Kumar Tankeshwar, K. N. Pathak +1 more

We investigate the effect of many-body correlations on the ground-state properties of two coupled charged Bose quantum wires. The intrawire and interwire correlations are treated on the same footing within the self-consistent mean-field theory of Singwi, Tosi, Land and Sjölander. Static properties, viz. , pair-correlation functions, local-field correction factors, screened interactions and susceptibilities, are calculated for a range of wire spacings d , wire radii , and boson density parameters . We find that the qualitative dependence of intrawire correlations on and remains the same as found for an isolated wire, except that they become slightly weaker with the decreasing spacing d . The interwire correlations, on the other hand, depend strongly on d and are found to grow in magnitude with decreasing d . Further, we find no evidence for the existence of a charge-density-wave ground state in the density range investigated, , in the close proximity of wires. A comparison with the similar studies on the coupled electron quantum wires reveals that the charge-density-wave instability observed there may be an artifact of the neglect of interwire correlation effects.

Correlations in two-dimensional electron gas: Random-phase approximation with exchange and ladder results

Francesco Pederiva, E. Lipparini, K Takayanagi

We have evaluated the density-density response of the two-dimensional electron gas at zero temperature by solving the Dyson equation for the particle-hole Green's function, including exchange Coulomb matrix elements and short-range contributions in the ladder approximation. We study the effect of these correlations on the total energy, compressibility per particle, local field factor G ( q ), static structure factor and pair-correlation function. Results are compared with the normal random-phase approximation, local field theories and quantum Monte Carlo calculations.

Electron correlations in quasi-one-dimensional electron systems: Intrinsic superconductivity

N. Nafari, B. Davoudi

In this paper, we study correlations in quasi-one-dimensional electron systems. To account for the short-range correlations we have used a ladder approximation (LA), and to account for the long-range correlations we have used the Singwi, Tosi, S\"olander, and Land (STLS) scheme. After solving the integral equation appearing in the LA and solving the set of self-consistent equations of the STLS scheme, we join the resulting static structure factor in the large- and small-$q$ limit smoothly. We then calculate the pair-correlation functions, the ground-state energy, the screened potential, and the plasmon dispersion relation. Our pair-correlation function remains positive everywhere (for ${r}_{s}<~6.5$) and its value at the origin, $g(0),$ is compared with the results of other calculational schemes. The screened potential is repulsive for ${r}_{s}<~2$ and shows a weak attractive part for ${r}_{s}>2.$ We have argued that in these systems the $s$-wave intrinsic superconductivity is absent. Finally, the quantities calculated in this paper are compared with the results of other calculational schemes.

Short-range correlations in a two-dimensional electron gas

Marco Polini, Gerardo Sica, B. Davoudi +1 more

We construct a model for the value of the pair distribution function g ↑↓ (0) between antiparallel-spin electrons at contact in a two-dimensional electron gas with e 2 / r interactions, as a function of the coupling-strength parameter r s . The model involves an interpolation between the result of a low- r s expansion, including the second-order direct and exchange contributions to the energy in the paramagnetic state, and the result of a partial-wave phase-shift analysis near Wigner crystallization. The interpolation formula is in excellent agreement with many-body calculations based on the ladder approximation. We further show through an STLS self-consistent calculation that g ↑↓ (0) is essentially independent of the state of spin polarization of the electron gas.
