Evidence for deamplification of quantum noise by nondegenerate four-wave mixing

Abstract

Experiments on squeezed state generation have yielded measured noise levels very near the quantum limit (as defined experimentally), even when the nonlinear interaction is strong enough to suppress classical noise by several decibels.1,2 The problem has been that the nonlinear media create noise by light scattering and fluorescence.

Broad-band squeezed states of light are generated by forward nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a single-mode optical fiber cooled below 4.2 K. The minimum total noise level was (12.5 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.5)% below the standard quantum limit.

Squeezing of classical noise by nondegenerate four-wave mixing in an optical fiber

M. D. Levenson, Robert M. Shelby, Stephen H. Perlmutter

Nondegenerate four-wave mixing in an optical fiber is shown to attenuate one quadrature of random sideband fluctuations created by external modulators. A theory of the nonlinear interaction that includes nonlinear dispersion fits the results. Analogous experiments on quantum noise inputs should prove successful.

Squeezed states in nondegenerate four-wave mixing

David A. Holm, Murray Sargent

Our quantum theory of multiwave mixing1 treats the interactions between one or two classical pump fields with one or two quantized fields in two-level media. It unifies a number of areas of quantum optics, such as resonance fluorescence, saturation spectroscopy, laser instabilities, and phase conjugation. This paper applies the theory to the generation of squeezed states of light.

Squeezed-light generation by four-wave mixing near an atomic resonance

Richard E. Slusher, Daniel F. Walls, M. D. Reid +3 more

Squeezed light generated by four-wave mixing near the Na atomic resonance is compared with a full quantum-theoretical model. Losses and dephasing that are due to spontaneous emission near the atomic resonance are included in this theoretical treatment. The experimental results show noise reduction greater than 1 dB below the standard quantum limits and are in good agreement with the quantum model at low pump intensities and large detuning. Theory and experiment show that limits to squeezed-light noise reduction resulting from spontaneous-emission losses can be largely avoided by using nondegenerate four-wave mixing and pump intensities near the atomic saturation values.

Squeezing in nondegenerate four-wave mixing

M. D. Reid, Daniel F. Walls

Ways to minimize spontaneous-emission noise due to quantum fluctuations in the medium are a major consideration in experiments designed to produce squeezed states of light. Motivated by the recent experiments of Slusher et al. we present a fully quantized model of nondegenerate four-wave mixing. We show that the spontaneous-emission noise, important at higher intensities in the degenerate case, may be minimized in the nondegenerate case for certain regimes of cavity and medium parameters.

Quantum theory of nondegenerate multiwave mixing

Seng‐Tiong Ho, Prem Kumar, Jeffrey H. Shapiro

Recently there has been much interest in the quantum theory of multiwave mixing in atomic media, partly due to the promise of generating squeezed states of light using four-wave mixing (FWM) schemes, which need a quantized electro-magnetic-field theory to assess the effect of propagation loss and spontaneous emission on squeezing. In fact, squeezed states have recently been observed in an intracavity nondegenerate backward FWM experiment in an atomic beam of sodium.1
