Level spacing statistics of the bidimensional Fermi liquid: I. Landau fixed point and integrability

Abstract

We investigate the statistical properties of the excitation spectrum of one- and two-dimensional models for Landau liquids. The level spacing statistics are found to be Poissonian for non-zero separations and sufficiently strong interactions. In the Poissonian regime, the level spacing statistics are independent of the precise form of the interaction parameters.

Level Spacing Statistics of Bidimensional Fermi Liquids. II. Landau Fixed Point and Quantum Chaos

R. Mélin

We investigate the presence of quantum chaos in the spectrum of the bidimensional Fermi liquid by means of analytical and numerical methods. This model is integrable in a certain limit by bosonization of the Fermi surface. We study the effect on the level statisticsof the momentum cutoff $Λ$ present in the bidimensional bosonization procedure. We first analyse the level spacing statistics in the $Λ$-restricted Hilbert space in one dimension. With $g_2$ and $g_4$ interactions, the level statistics are found to be Poissonian at low energies, and G.O.E. at higher energies, for a given cut-off $Λ$. In order to study this cross-over, a finite temperature is introduced as a way of focussing, for a large inverse temperature $β$, on the low energy many-body states, and driving the statistics from G.O.E. to Poissonian. As far as two dimensions are concerned, we diagonalize the Fermi liquid Hamiltonian with a small number of orbitals. The level spacing statistics are found to be Poissonian in the $Λ$-restricted Hilbert space, provided the diagonal elements are of the same order of magnitude as the off-diagonal matrix elements of the Hamiltonian.

Breakdown of the Fermi Liquid picture in one dimensional fermion systems: connection with the energy level statistics

R. Mélin, Benoît Douçot, Patrick Butaud

Using the adiabatic switching of interactions, we establish a condition for the existence of electronic quasiparticles in a Luttinger liquid. It involves a characteristic interaction strength proportional to the inverse square root of the system length. An investigation of the exact energy level separation probability distribution shows that this interaction scale also corresponds to a cross-over from the non interacting behaviour to a rather typical case for integrable systems, namely an exponential distribution. The level spacing statistics of a spin $1/2$, one branch Luttinger model are also analyzed, as well as the level statistics of a two coupled chain model.

Spectrum statistics in the integrable Lieb-Liniger model

Samy Mailoud, F. Borgonovi, Felix M. Izrailev

We address the old and widely debated question of the spectrum statistics of integrable quantum systems, through the analysis of the paradigmatic Lieb-Liniger model. This quantum many-body model of one-dimensional interacting bosons allows for the rigorous determination of energy spectra via the Bethe ansatz approach and our interest is to reveal the characteristic properties of energy levels in dependence of the model parameters. Using both analytical and numerical studies we show that the properties of spectra strongly depend on whether the analysis is done for a full energy spectrum or for a single subset with fixed total momentum. We show that the Poisson distribution of spacing between nearest-neighbor energies can occur only for a set of energy levels with fixed total momentum, for neither too large nor too weak interaction strength, and for sufficiently high energy. By studying long-range correlations between energy levels, we found strong deviations from the predictions based on the assumption of pseudorandom character of the distribution of energy levels.

Energy level statistics for models of coupled single-mode Bose--Einstein condensates

Sílvio R. Dahmen, Jon Links, Ross H. McKenzie +1 more

We study the distribution of energy level spacings in two models describing coupled single-mode Bose-Einstein condensates. Both models have a fixed number of degrees of freedom, which is small compared to the number of interaction parameters, and is independent of the dimensionality of the Hilbert space. We find that the distribution follows a universal Poisson form independent of the choice of coupling parameters, which is indicative of the integrability of both models. These results complement those for integrable lattice models where the number of degrees of freedom increases with increasing dimensionality of the Hilbert space. Finally, we also show that for one model the inclusion of an additional interaction which breaks the integrability leads to a non-Poisson distribution.

Theory of fermion liquids

H. Dharma Kwon, A. Houghton, John Bradley Marston

We develop a general theory of fermion liquids in spatial dimensions greater than 1. The principal method, bosonization, is applied to the cases of short- and long-range longitudinal interactions and to transverse gauge interactions. All the correlation funtions of the system may be obtained with the use of a generating functional. Short-range and Coulomb interactions do not destroy the Landau-Fermi fixed point. Non-Fermi liquid fixed points are found, however, in the cases of a super-long-range longitudinal interaction in two dimensions and transverse gauge interactions in two and three spatial dimensions. We consider in some detail the (2+1)-dimensional problem of a Chern-Simons gauge action combined with a longitudinal two-body interaction V(q)\ensuremath{\propto}\ensuremath{\Vert}q${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Vert}}}^{\mathit{y}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, which controls the density, and hence gauge, fluctuations. For y0 we find that the gauge interaction is irrelevant and the Landau fixed point is stable, while for y>0 the interaction is relevant and the fixed point cannot be accessed by bosonization. Of special importance is the case y=0 (Coulomb interaction), which describes the Halperin-Lee-Read theory of the half-filled Landau level. We obtain the full quasiparticle propagator, which is of a marginal Fermi-liquid form. Using Ward identities, we show that neither the inclusion of nonlinear terms in the fermion dispersion nor vertex corrections alters our results: the fixed point is accessible by bosonization. As the two-point fermion Green's function is not gauge invariant, we also invetigate the gauge-invariant density response function. Near momentum Q=2${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$, in addition to the Kohn anomaly we find other nonanalytic behavior. In the appendies we present a numerical calculation of the spectral function for a Fermi liquid with Landau parameter ${\mathit{f}}_{0}$\ensuremath{\ne}0. We also show how Kohn's theorem is satisfied within the bosonization framework.
