Mixtures of ultracold atoms in one-dimensional disordered potentials

François Crépin, Gergely Zaránd, Pascal Simon

We study interacting one-dimensional two-component mixtures of cold atoms in a random potential, and extend the results reported earlier [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 115301 (2010)]. We construct the phase diagram of a disordered Bose-Fermi mixture as a function of the strength of the Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi interactions, and the ratio of the bosonic sound velocity and the Fermi velocity. Performing renormalization group and variational calculations, three phases are identified: (i) a fully delocalized two-component Luttinger liquid with superfluid bosons and fermions, (ii) a fully localized phase with both components pinned by disorder, and (iii) an intermediate phase where fermions are localized but bosons are superfluid. Within the variational approach, each phase corresponds to a different level of replica symmetry breaking. In the fully localized phase we find that the bosonic and fermionic localization lengths can largely differ. We also compute the long-wavelength asymptotic behavior of the momentum distribution as well as that of the structure factor of the atoms (both experimentally accessible), and discuss how the three phases can be experimentally distinguished.

Bose–Fermi pair formation in the mixture of cold atomic gases

T. Suzuki

We study the role of the Bose–Fermi (BF) pair correlations in the cold BF-mixture of atomic gases. After summarizing the previous results on the formation of composite BF-pairs in the uniform BF mixture, we present an exactly solvable model where bosons and fermions are distributed over finite number of orbits and interact via attractive pairing-type interaction. We show that, as the interaction strength increases, BF pairs with different quantum numbers are gradually created in the ground state through a series of level crossings, until finally the system becomes a Fermi sea of BF-pairs.

Dimer, trimer, and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov liquids in mass- and spin-imbalanced trapped binary mixtures in one dimension

Marcello Dalmonte, Kai Dieckmann, Tommaso Roscilde +4 more

We present a systematic investigation of attractive binary mixtures in the presence of both spin- and mass-imbalance in one-dimensional setups described by the Hubbard model. After discussing typical cold atomic experimental realizations and the relation between microscopic and effective parameters, we study several many-body features of trapped Fermi-Fermi and Bose-Bose mixtures such as density profiles, momentum distributions, and correlation functions by means of density-matrix-renormalization-group and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we focus on the stability of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov, dimer, and trimer fluids in inhomogeneous situations, as typically realized in cold gas experiments due to the harmonic confinement. We finally consider possible experimental signatures of these phases both in the presence of a finite polarization and of a finite temperature.
