Abstract

Comparison of absorption, fluorescence, and polarization spectroscopy of atomic rubidium

Seth Ashman, C. Stifler, Joaquín Romero

An ongoing spectroscopic investigation of atomic rubidium utilizes a two-photon, single-laser excitation process. Transitions accessible with our tunable laser include 5P1/2 (F ′ ) ← 5S1/2 (F) and 5P3/2 (F ′ ) ← 5S1/2 (F). The laser is split into a pump and probe beam to allow for Doppler-free measurements of transitions between hyperfine levels. The pump and probe beams are overlapped in a counter-propagating geometry and the laser frequency scans over a transition. Absorption, fluorescence and polarization spectroscopy techniques are applied to this basic experimental setup. The temperature of the vapor cell and the power of the pump and probe beams have been varied to explore line broadening effects and signal-to-noise of each technique. This humble setup will hopefully grow into a more robust experimental arrangement in which double resonance, two-laser excitations are used to explore hyperfine state changing collisions between rubidium atoms and noble gas atoms. Rb-noble gas collisions can transfer population between hyperfine levels, such as 5P3/2 (F ′ = 3) Collision ←− 5P3/2 (F ′ = 2), and the probe beam couples 7S1/2 (F ′′ = 2) ← 5P3/2 (F ′ = 3). Polarization spectroscopy signal depends on the rate of population transfer due to the collision as well as maintaining the orientation created by the pump laser. Fluorescence spectroscopy relies only on transfer of population due to the collision. Comparison of these techniques yields information regarding the change of the magnetic sublevels, mF , during hyperfine state changing collisions.

Frequency stabilization of 1.5μm laser diode by using double resonance optical pumping

Han-Sub Lee Moon

We present the double resonance optical pumping(DROP) spectra in the transition 5P $_{3}$ 2/-4D $_{3}$ 2/ and 5P $_{3}$ 2/-4D $_{5}$ 2/ of ( $^{87}$ Rb) and the frequency stabilization in the $1.5mutextrm{m}$ region using those spectra. Those spectra have high signal-to-noise ratio and narrow spectral linewidth, which is about 10 MHz. We could account fur the relative intensities of the hyperfine states of those spectra by the spontaneous emission into the other state. When the frequency of the $1.5mutextrm{m}$ laser diode was stabilized to the DROP spectrum, the frequency fluctuation was about 0.2 MHz fDr sampling time of 0.1 s and the Allan deviation(or the square root of the Allan variance) was about 1 ${\times}$ 10 $^{-11}$ for averaging time of l00s.

Frequency stabilization of a fiber laser to rubidium: a high-accuracy 1.53-μm wavelength standard

Sarah L. Gilbert

Spectroscopy of the rubidium 5P3/2 yields 4D5/2 transition near 1.529 micrometers has been performed using a single-longitudinal-mode erbium-doped fiber laser. Rubidium atoms were laser-cooled and confined in a vapor-cell Zeeman optical trap. This produced a dense sample of cold atoms and reduce the Doppler broadening of the transition to less than the natural linewidth. Transition linewidths of 10 MHz were observed on the 5P3/2 yields 4D5/2 transition and the fiber laser was actively stabilized to the 5P3/2, F equals 3 yields 4D5/2, F' equals 3 line of 87Rb.

Double resonance optical pumping spectrum and its application for frequency stabilization of a laser diode

Han Seb Moon, W. K. Lee, L. Lee +1 more

We present double resonance optical pumping (DROP) spectra for the 5P3∕2–4D3∕2 transition and the 5P3∕2–4D5∕2 transition of R87b and we use these spectra for frequency stabilization in the 1.5μm region. The spectra, compared to the conventional double resonance spectrum, show a good signal-to-noise ratio and a narrow spectral linewidth for laser frequency stabilization. The different intensities of the hyperfine states were attributed to the different rates of double resonance optical pumping into the other ground state. When we stabilized the frequency of a 1.5μm laser diode to the DROP spectrum, the best frequency stability was 1×10−11 after 100s.
