Entanglement for quantum walks on the line

Abstract

The discrete-time quantum walk is a quantum counterpart of the random walk. It is expected that the model plays important roles in the quantum field. In the quantum information theory, entanglement is a key resource. We use the von Neumann entropy to measure the entanglement between the coin and the particle's position of the quantum walks. Also we deal with the Shannon entropy which is an important quantity in the information theory. In this paper, we show limits of the von Neumann entropy and the Shannon entropy of the quantum walks on the one dimensional lattice starting from the origin defined by arbitrary coin and initial state. In order to derive these limits, we use the path counting method which is a combinatorial method for computing probability amplitude.

Long-time entanglement in the Quantum Walk

Gonzalo Abal, R. Donangelo, Hugo Fort

Abstract. The coin-position entanglement generated by the evolution operator of a discrete–time quantum walk is quantified, using the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density operator (entropy of entanglement). In the case of a single walker, the entropy of entanglement converges, in the long time limit, to a well defined value which depends on the initial state. Exact expressions are obtained for local and non-local initial conditions. We also discuss the asymptotic bi-partite entanglement generated by non-separable coin operations for two coherent quantum walkers. In this case, the entropy of entanglement is observed to increase logarithmically with time. 1.

Asymptotic entanglement in 2D quantum walks

Mostafa Annabestani, Mohammad Reza Abolhasani, Gonzalo Abal

The evolution operator of a discrete-time quantum walk involves a conditional shift in position space which entangles the 'coin' and position degrees of freedom of the walker. After several steps, the coin-position entanglement (CPE) converges to a well-defined value which depends on the initial state. In this work we provide an analytical method which allows for the exact calculation of the asymptotic reduced density operator and the corresponding CPE for a discrete-time quantum walk on a two-dimensional lattice. We use the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density operator as an entanglement measure. The method is applied to the case of a Hadamard walk for which the dependence of the resulting CPE on initial conditions is obtained. Initial states leading to the maximum or minimum CPE are identified and the relation between the coin or position entanglement present in the initial state of the walker and the final level of CPE is discussed. The CPE obtained from separable initial states satisfies an additivity property in terms of CPE of the corresponding one-dimensional cases. Non-local initial conditions are also considered and we find that the extreme case of an initial uniform position distribution leads to the largest CPE variation.

Asymptotic analysis of the one-dimensional quantum walks by the Tsallis and Rényi entropies

Ide, Yusuke, Norio Konno, Junji Shikata

The Tsallis and Rényi entropies are important quantities in the information theory, statistics and related fields because the Tsallis entropy is an one parameter generalization of the Shannon entropy and the Rényi entropy includes several useful entropy measures such as the Shannon entropy, Min-entropy and so on, as special choices of its parameter. On the other hand, the discrete-time quantum walk plays important roles in various applications, for example, quantum speed-up algorithm and universal computation. In this paper, we show limiting behaviors of the Tsallis and Rényi entropies for discrete-time quantum walks on the line which are starting from the origin and defined by arbitrary coin and initial state. The results show that the Tsallis entropy behaves in polynomial order of time with the parameter dependent exponent while the Rényi entropy tends to infinity in logarithmic order of time independent of the choice of the parameter. Moreover, we show the difference between the Rényi entropy and the logarithmic function characterizes by the Rényi entropy of the limit distribution of the quantum walk. In addition, we show an example of asymptotic behavior of the conditional Rényi entropies of the quantum walk.

One-dimensional quantum walks with a position-dependent coin

Rashid Ahmad, Uzma Sajjad, Muhammad Sajid

Abstract We investigate the evolution of a discrete-time one-dimensional quantum walk driven by a position-dependent coin. The rotation angle, which depends upon the position of a quantum particle, parameterizes the coin operator. For different values of the rotation angle, we observe that such a coin leads to a variety of probability distributions, e.g. localized, periodic, classical-like, semi-classical-like, and quantum-like. Further, we study the Shannon entropy associated with position and the coin space of a quantum particle, and compare them with the case of the position-independent coin. Our results show that the entropy is smaller for most values of the rotation angle as compared to the case of the position-independent coin. We also study the effect of entanglement on the behavior of probability distribution and Shannon entropy by considering a quantum walk with two identical position-dependent entangled coins. We observe that in general, a wave function becomes more localized as compared to the case of the position-independent coin and hence the corresponding Shannon entropy is lower. Our results show that a position-dependent coin can be used as a controlling tool of quantum walks.

Von Neumann Entanglement and Decoherence in Two Dimensional Quantum Walks

Clement Boateng Ampadu

Using the concept of von Neumann entropy, we quantify the information content of the various components of the quantum walk system, including the mutual information between its subsystems (coin and position) and use it to give a precise formulation of the measure of entanglement between subsystems.
