Abstract

We study the measurement-induced non-Gaussian operation on the single- and two-mode \\textit{Gaussian} squeezed vacuum states with beam splitters and on-off type photon detectors, with which \\textit{mixed non-Gaussian} states are generally obtained in the conditional process. It is known that the entanglement can be enhanced via this non-Gaussian operation on the two-mode squeezed vacuum state. We show that, in the range of practical squeezing parameters, the conditional outputs are still close to Gaussian states, but their second order variances of quantum fluctuations and correlations are effectively suppressed and enhanced, respectively. To investigate an operational meaning of these states, especially entangled states, we also evaluate the quantum dense coding scheme from the viewpoint of the mutual information, and we show that non-Gaussian entangled state can be advantageous compared with the original two-mode squeezed state.

Measurement-induced nonclassical state from two-mode squeezed vacuum states via beam splitter and its entanglement properties

Heng-Mei Li, Xue-xiang Xu, Hong‐Chun Yuan +1 more

Abstract A theoretical scheme of generating a new kind of two-mode non-Gaussian entangled state is presented by means of beam splitters (BSs) and conditional measurement. Here, after detecting photon numbers at the output port of each BS with two kinds of two-mode squeezed vacuum-state inputs, the output state is proved to be two-variable Hermite polynomial excited squeezed vacuum states. Its success probability of detection, namely, normalization factor, is derived in compact expression related to the Jacobi polynomials. Based on the general expression of expectation value, the statistical properties are discussed by exploring the cross-correlation function and anti-bunching effect. The entanglement properties are also investigated by using the Shchukin–Vogel criteria and Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen correlation. The results show that the entanglement of the output state can be enhanced with the increasing photon detection number under the condition of simultaneously detecting the same photon number at the two output ports, which may have good potential for applications in the field of quantum information processing.

Quantum state engineering with entangled squeezed states and photon number detector

Akira Kitagawa, Katsuji Yamamoto, Koji Nagata +2 more

The photon subtraction operation is an effective method to enhance an entanglement of the two-mode squeezed vacuum state. We show that it can be well approximated to the two-mode squeezed state with an enhanced squeezing although it is basically a mixed and non-Gaussian state. Such property can be directly observed by the current technology. We also study the continuous variable quantum dense coding with the photon subtracted two-mode squeezed state. It is shown that, in particular squeezing region, its error probability performance can be greatly improved from the original two-mode squeezed state. Since quantum dense coding is the protocol to transmit classical information, our analysis provides an alternative operational meaning of the entanglement involved in the on-off photon subtracted state, compared to the previous results, such as teleportation or the nonlocality, that could help to quantify the entanglement of mixed and non-Gaussian states.

Enhanced quantum features of non-Gaussian states by applying a two-mode squeezing operator to two generalized single-mode squeezed vacuum states

Truong Minh Duc, Dinh Phuoc Le, Tran Quang Dat +1 more

Abstract This paper investigates the quantum features of non-Gaussian states generated by applying a two-mode squeezing operator S ˆ a b ( s ) to two generalized single-mode squeezed vacuum states (SVSs), each formed by the superposition of an SVS and a single–photon–subtracted SVS. The results show that, in the new states, the two-mode squeezing effect, the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) correlation, the Hillery–Zubairy entanglement, and the linear entropy are all enhanced as the two-mode squeezing parameter s increases. Moreover, both the degrees of squeezing and entanglement are improved and exceed those of the two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSVS) for stronger single-mode squeezing parameters. The optimal conditions for achieving such enhancements are identified for different regimes, depending on whether the generalized SVSs are purely Gaussian, maximally non-Gaussian, or intermediate states. In an application, the quantum Cramér–Rao bound (QCRB) is evaluated when the non-Gaussian states are employed as inputs to a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The results further demonstrate that the enhanced phase sensitivity in the MZI originates from both the squeezing strengths and the intrinsic photon-subtraction operation. These findings highlight the potential of the new non-Gaussian states as promising resources for quantum metrology and quantum sensing.

Entanglement evaluation of non-Gaussian states generated by photon subtraction from squeezed states

Akira Kitagawa, Masahiro Takeoka, Masahide Sasaki +1 more

We consider the problem of evaluating the entanglement of non-Gaussian mixed states generated by photon subtraction from entangled squeezed states. The entanglement measures we use are the negativity and the logarithmic negativity. These measures possess the unusual property of being computable with linear algebra packages even for high-dimensional quantum systems. We numerically evaluate these measures for the non-Gaussian mixed states which are generated by photon subtraction with on/off photon detectors. The results are compared with the behavior of certain operational measures, namely the teleportation fidelity and the mutual information in the dense coding scheme. It is found that all of these results are mutually consistent, in the sense that whenever the enhancement is seen in terms of the operational measures, the negativity and the logarithmic negativity are also enhanced.

Quantum illumination using non-Gaussian states with conditional measurements

Huan Zhang, Ying Xia, Wei Ye +2 more

Quantum illumination is a quantum sensing protocol primarily used for object detection, which aims to detect the presence of a target with low reflectivity in the free space using quantum light fields. Here we investigate a quantum illumination scheme using an entangled light source by performing non-Gaussian operations on the two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state in order to reduce the detection error probability and meanwhile improve the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio. We demonstrate that under the same squeezing parameter, the non-Gaussian operations can significantly reduce the detection error rate compared with the original TMSV state. Under the same average signal photon number, both the TMSV states with and without non-Gaussian operations can provide smaller error rate than that of the coherent state. In addition, we consider the balanced homodyne detection on idler and return signal photons as joint measurement and find that non-Gaussian operations can enhance the SNR of target detection by about 6--9 dB compared with that using TMSV. These results here demonstrate the advantage of the non-Gaussian entangled source in quantum illumination protocol and can find potential applications in target detection in noisy environment.
