Charge and spin fractionalization in strongly correlated 1D systems

Abstract

We investigate the phenomenon of spin and charge fractionalization of an electron injected into a strongly correlated chain, namely the 1D t-J model, by means of the time-dependent DMRG method. In order to compare and interpret our results we use the Luttinger Liquid (LL) theory and the exact solution of the model at the supersymmetric point as analytical framework. We show that fractionalization of charge and spin beyond the forms described by LL theory takes place at high energies, when a spin-1/2 fermion is injected into the t-J model.

Charge and spin fractionalization beyond the Luttinger-liquid paradigm

A. Moreno, Alejandro Muramatsu, J. M. P. Carmelo

It is well established that at low energies one-dimensional (1D) fermionic systems are described by the Luttinger-liquid (LL) theory, which predicts phenomena such as spin-charge separation and charge fractionalization into chiral modes. Here we show through the time evolution of an electron injected into a 1D $t$-$J$ model, obtained with time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, that a further fractionalization of both charge and spin takes place beyond the hydrodynamic limit. Its dynamics can be understood at the supersymmetric point ($J=2t$) in terms of the excitations of the Bethe-ansatz solution. Furthermore we show that fractionalization with similar characteristics extends to the whole region corresponding to a repulsive LL.

Charge and spin dynamics in the one-dimensional t- Jz and t-J models

Shu Zhang, Michael Karbach, Gerhard H. Muller +1 more

The impact of the spin-flip terms on the (static and dynamic) charge and spin correlations in the Luttinger-liquid ground state of the one-dimensional (1D) t-J model is assessed by comparison with the same quantities in the 1D t-${\mathrm{J}}_{\mathrm{z}}$ model, where spin-flip terms are absent. We employ the recursion method combined with a weak-coupling or a strong-coupling continued-fraction analysis. At ${\mathrm{J}}_{\mathrm{z}}$/t=${0}^{+}$ we use the Pfaffian representation of dynamic spin correlations. The changing nature of the dynamically relevant charge and spin excitations on approach of the transition to phase separation is investigated in detail. At the transition point, the t-${\mathrm{J}}_{\mathrm{z}}$ ground state has zero (static) charge correlations and very short-ranged (static) spin correlations, whereas the t-J ground state is critical. The t-${\mathrm{J}}_{\mathrm{z}}$ charge excitations (but not the spin excitations) at the transition have a single-mode nature, whereas charge and spin excitations have a complicated structure in the t-J model. A major transformation of the t-J spin excitations takes place between two distinct regimes within the Luttinger-liquid phase, while the t-${\mathrm{J}}_{\mathrm{z}}$ spin excitations are found to change much more gradually. In the t-${\mathrm{J}}_{\mathrm{z}}$ model, phase separation is accompanied by N\'eel long-range order, caused by the condensation of electron clusters with an already existing alternating up-down spin configuration (topological long-range order). In the t-J model, by contrast, the spin-flip processes in the exchange coupling are responsible for continued strong spin fluctuations (dominated by two-spinon excitations) in the phase-separated state.

Time-Dependent Evolution of Two Coupled Luttinger Models of Spin-1/2 Fermions

Zhou Zong-Li, Ping Lou

Based on the field-theoretical bosonization we consider the spinful system consisting of two disconnected Luttinger liquids, which are coupled at time t = 0 through chiral density-density interactions. We show the well-known spin-charge separation in this 1D system by means of bosonization and Bogoliubov transformation. To evaluate analytically the one-particle equal-time correlation functions, Cazalilla's methods are extended to spin-charge sectors. It is found that in long time limit the behavior of correlations does not coincide with that of equilibrium equal-time correlations of two coupled spinful Luttinger liquids. In order to compare with experimental results, the improved exponent that governs the power-law behavior of equal-time correlations of the non-equilibrium system is obtained at the end of this work.

Spectral properties of a spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid

Adrian E. Feiguin, Gregory A. Fiete

We present time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) results for strongly interacting one-dimensional fermionic systems at finite temperature. When interactions are strong the characteristic spin energy can be greatly suppressed relative to the characteristic charge energy, allowing for the possibility of spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid physics when the temperature is high compared to the spin energy, but small compared to the charge energy. Using DMRG we compute the spectral properties of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model at arbitrary temperatures with respect to both spin and charge energies. We study the full crossover from the Luttinger liquid regime to the spin-incoherent regime, focusing on small $J/t$, where the signatures of spin-incoherent behavior are more manifest. Our method allows us to access the analytically intractable regime where temperature is on the order of the spin energy, $T\ensuremath{\sim}J$. Our results should be helpful in the interpretation of experiments that may be in the crossover regime, $T\ensuremath{\sim}J$, and apply to one-dimensional cold atomic gases where finite-temperature effects are appreciable. The technique may also be used to guide the development of analytical approximations for the crossover regime.

Luttinger liquid properties of highly correlated electron systems in one dimension

N. Kawakami, Sung-Kil Yang

An exact description is given of the long-distance behaviour of the one-dimensional t-J model at t=J. The authors employ the Bathe ansatz method and the finite-size scaling technique in conformal field theory. The charge and spin degrees of freedom are separated, and described by two independent c=1 conformal theories. The critical exponents for the charge, spin, electron and superconducting correlation functions are obtained for arbitrary band filling. The authors then make detailed comparison of the t-J model with the repulsive Hubbard model with emphasis on the Luttinger liquid properties. Analysing the electron filling dependence they observe the enhancement of the superconducting correlations compared with the highly correlated Hubbard model. The effect of the external magnetic field at and near half-filling is also discussed.
