Entanglement-induced population trapping by Schrödinger's cat

Christopher C. Gerry, R. Grobe

We propose an experiment that is a variation of the Schrödinger's cat ′paradox' wherein the entanglement between a microscopic system and a macroscopic system is of primary interest. The experiment involves tunable entanglement and serves as a model for controllable decoherence in the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics where atoms interact dispersively with a cavity field initially in a coherent state. The interaction produces an entanglement between the atom and the field, and the degree of entanglement can be probed by subjecting the atom to resonant classical radiation after it leaves the cavity. The amplitude of the resulting Rabi oscillations reflects the degree of the entanglement, there being no Rabi oscillations when the entanglement is maximum. We show that the cavity damping does not affect the experiment.

Connection between Wigner distribution of nonclassical fields and collapse-revival of atomic dynamics

C. H. Raymond Ooi

The transient evolution of nonclassical radiation fields interacting with an atom in a cavity is correlated to the atomic dynamics. Connection between the atomic phases of collapse and revival, and the Wigner function pattern is explored. Initial classical coherent field can evolve into nonclassical field. Schrodinger cat state field is generate during the atomic collapse phase. For initial Schrodinger cat field state, the state dissolves with time but revives during the atomic phase that corresponds with the initial phase. More intricate but orderly characteristics are found between the collapse-revival dynamics and the patterns of the Wigner function for initial thermal field.

Experiments with single atoms in a cabity: entanglement, Schrödinger's cats and decoherence

S. Haroche, M. Brune, J. M. Raimond

We perform experiments with Rydberg atoms crossing one at a time a superconducting cavity containing a few microwave photons. The coupling between the atoms and the cavity field is either resonant or dispersive. In the resonant case, quantum Rabi oscillations induced by the vacuum or by a small coherent field are observed. These signals reveals in a striking way the quantization of the field. Quantum Rabi oscillations are also used to prepare Fock states of radiation, to transfer information or to produce entanglement between two successive atoms crossing the cavity. Dispersive atom–field coupling is used to prepare and probe coherent superpositions of field states with different phases (Schrödinger's cat states). The progressive decoherence of these states is observed. These experiments constitute fundamental tests of quantum theory and shed light on the transition from quantum to classical in mesoscopic systems.
