Abstract

This paper proposes a flexible scheme to form various optical multi-well traps for cold atoms or molecules by using a simple optical system composed of an compounded amplitude cosine-only grating and a single lens illuminated by a plane light wave or a Gaussian beam. Dynamic manipulation and evolution of multi-well trap can be easily implemented by controlling the modulation frequency of the cosine patterns. It also discusses how to expand this multi-well trap to two-dimensional lattices with single- or multi-well trap by using an orthogonally or non-orthogonally modulated grating, as well as using incoherent multi-beam illumination, and these results show that all the symmetric structures of two-dimensional Bravais lattices can be obtained facilely by using proposed scheme.

A Novel Scheme of the Controllable Eight-well Optical Trap for Cold Atoms or Molecules and its Optical Lattice

LU Jun-fa

we expound a novel scheme to form a controllable eight-well optical trap by using an optical system of a binary-phase plate composed by liquid crystal and a lens illuminated by a plane light wave.We discuss the bidirectional evolution process of the optical trap from eight-well to four-well,double-well or single-well.The result shows that the proposed eight-well trap can be continuously changed into a four-well,double-well or single-well trap by changing the brewage phase distributing of liquid crystal room optical modulator and vice versa. We also discuss the possibly important appliance of the eight-well optical trap in atom or molecule optical and in other fields.

Controllable double-well optical trap for cold atoms or molecules and its one-dimensional and two-dimensional optical lattices

Ji Xian-Ming, Jianping Yin

We propose a novel, to our knowledge, scheme to form a controllable double-well optical dipole trap for cold atoms (or molecules) by using an optical system composed of a binary pi-phase plate and a lens illuminated by a plane light wave. We calculate the intensity distribution of the double-well trap and derive the analytical relationships between the characteristic parameters of the double-well trap (including geometric parameters, intensity distributions, and intensity gradients and their curvatures) and the relative aperture beta of the lens system. We also extend our controllable double-well trap to its trap array by using a binary pi-phase grating combined with an array of spherical microlenses. Our study shows that, if the pi-phase plate (or the pi-phase grating) is moved along the x direction, our double-well trap (or array of double-well ones) can continuously evolve to a single-well one (or an array of single-well ones) and vice versa, which can be used to study cold collisions between two atomic (or molecular) samples and atom interference with Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a double-well potential; to prepare quantum entanglement between two macroscopic atomic assembles, even to realize an all-optical double-well atomic (molecular) BEC (including an array of all-optical double-well BECs) by using optical-potential evaporative cooling; to form a novel optical lattice with a larger lattice constant; and so on.

Generation of an adjustable double-well optical trap by shift phase gratings

Ji Xian-Ming, Shuwu Xu, Lu Jun-Fa +2 more

A novel scheme was proposed to form the double-well optical trap by using shift phase gratings. A few pairs of adjustable double-well optical traps for trapping cold atoms or cold molecules were formed on the focal plane when the gratings were illuminated by plane light wave (or TEM00 mode Gaussian light wave) and focused by positive lens. The intensity distribution was calculated, and then the intensity distribution gradients as well as the analytical relations between geometrical parameters of the traps and the parameters of the optical system were derived. At the same time, three different evolution processes from double-well to unit-well were investigated. Also, optical dipole potential and photon scattering rate of the trapped cold atoms were calculated. The results show that the scheme not only is simple and convenient to realize, but also has wide application prospect in many fields, such as atomic physics, atomic optics, molecular optics and quantum optics.

A combinative triple-well optical trap for three-species cold atoms or molecules

Lu Jun-Fa, Qi Zhou, Yin Jianping +1 more

We propose a scheme to form a combinative triple-well optical trap for cold atoms or molecules in focus plane by using an optical system composed of a lens and a phase-type spatial light modulator (SLM) based on liquid crystal microdisplays illuminated by a plane light wave. The principle of forming a triple-well optical trap is analyzed and the characteristic parameters of optical potential are calculated. We also discuss the evolution between a tripe-well optical trap and a double-well one (or a single-well one). Additionally, the propotential applications of our triple-well trap and its novel optical lattices in four-wave mixing with matter waves, cold collision of three atomic species and so on, are explored.

Controllable four-well optical trap for cold atoms or molecules

Lu Jun-Fa, Ji Xian-Ming, Yin Jian-Ping +1 more

In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to build a controllable four-well optical trap for cold atoms or molecules by using an optical system of a binary π-phase plate and a lens illuminated by a plane light wave. We calculate the intensity distribution of the four-well optical trap, and discuss the evolution process of the optical trap from four wells to two wells or form four wells to a single well, and derive some analytical relations between the characteristic parameters of the four-well trap (including geometric parameters, intensity distribution, intensity gradients and their curvatures) and the parameters of the optical lens system. Our study shows that our four-well trap can be continuously changed into a double-well one or a single-well one by moving the π-phase plate, and the relation between the distance of the trapping centers of the four wells or two wells and the moving distance of the π-phase plate is obtained by data fitting. So our four-well trap scheme has important and wide potential aplications in the fields of ultracold atomic physics, cold molecular physics, atom optics, molecule optics and quantum optics, and even in the fields of quantum calculation and information processing, and so on.

Array of micro-optical traps for cold atoms or cold molecules using a Damman grating

Ji Xian-Ming, Lu Jun-Fa, Renwang Mu +2 more

We propose a novel scheme to produce an array of micro-optical traps by using an optical system composed of a Damman grating and a spherical lens, which is illuminated by a red detuned Gaussian laser beam. We derive formulas to calculate the periodical structures of the micro-optical well arrays, and characteristics of each well, such as the spatial intensity distribution, intensity gradient, and geometrical parameters. Applications of our micro-optical traps in the fields of atom and molecule optics are briefly discussed. Our study shows that the proposed array of micro-optical wells can be used to trap cold atoms or cold molecules more efficiently than previous optical traps, even to prepare novel optical lattices.
