Abstract

Quantum interference may lead to suppression and enhancement of the two-photon resonant nondegenerate fourwave mixing signal in a cascade four-level system.Such phenomena are demonstrated in Ba through inducing atomic coherence between the ground state 6s^2 and the doubly excited autoionizing Rydberg state 6trod.This method can be used as a new spectroscopic tool for measuring the transition dipole moment between two highly excited atomic states.

Two-photon resonant four-wave mixing in a dressed atomic system

We study two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NFWM) in a dressed cascade four-level system. In the presence of a strong coupling field, the two-photon resonant NFWM spectrum exhibits Autler-Townes splitting, accompanied by either suppression or enhancement of the NFWM signal. Such phenomena are demonstrated in Ba through inducing of atomic coherence between the ground state $6{s}^{2}$ and the doubly excited autoionizing Rydberg state $6pnd$. This technique provides a spectroscopic tool for measuring not only the resonant frequency and dephasing rate but also the transition dipole moment between two highly excited atomic states.

Two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing via quantum interference

孙江 Sun Jiang, Zuo Zhan-Chun, Xin Mi +4 more

We study the quantum interference in two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NFWM) in a dressed cascade four-level system in which the two upper levels are coupled by a strong laser field. We find that in the presence of a strong coupling field, two-photon resonant NFWM spectrum exhibits Autler-Townes splitting, which reflects the levels of the dressed states. It also leads to either suppression or enhancement of the NFWM signal. This scheme involves the resonant three-photon excitation, therefore, provides a new spectroscopic tool for studying highly excited atomic states with high sensitivity.

Atomic coherence in nondegenerate four-wave mixing

Two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NFWM) with the addition of a coupling field in Ba atomic vapour has been studied. We find that coherence of the atomic level transitions leads to suppression of the NFWM signal, giving rise to a dip with a linewidth that is linearly proportional to the intensity of the coupling field.

A New Method for the Measurement of Atomic Rydberg State——Two-Photon Resonant Nondegenerate Four-Wave Mixing

Guo Qing

A new method for the determination of atomic Rydberg state by two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NFWM) with a resonant intermediate state was established.Differing from other experiment techniques, this method is a pure optical technique.Instead of detecting electrons or ions, the signal here is a coherent light.Two-photon resonant NFWM is a Doppler-free spectroscopy by using the narrow bandwidth of incident laser beams.

Suppression of Amplified Spontaneous Emission by the Four-Wave Mixing Process

Michelle S. Malcuit, Daniel J. Gauthier, Robert W. Boyd

Two-photon-resonant excitation of the sodium $3d$ level can lead to the generation of new frequencies either by amplified spontaneous emission at the $3d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3p$ transition frequency or by a resonantly enhanced four-wave mixing process. Competition between these two processes has been observed. The four-wave mixing process can suppress amplified spontaneous emission by preventing the excitation of the $3d$ level due to an interference between two different pathways connecting the ground ($3s$) and $3d$ states.

Observation of Rydberg series of neutral barium by two-photon resonent nondegenerate four-wave mixing

Sun Jiang, Zuo Zhan-Chun, Guo Qing-Lin +5 more

We have applied two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NFWM) with a resonant intermediate state to measure the energy levels of the Ba even-parity J=0 and J=2 series. Differing from other experiment techniques, our method is a pure optical technique. Instead of detecting electrons or ions, the signal here is a coherent light. Two-photon resonant NFWM is a Doppler-free spectroscopy when the incident laser beams have narrow bandwidths.
