Abstract

This paper presents an experiment on single-photon spectrum generation using an optical parametric oscillator device with cavity-enhanced parametric down-conversion. A PPKTP crystal inside a cavity far below threshold is pumped in order to create signal-idler photon pairs. Triple-resonance of pump, signal, and idler fields are achieved using a compensating KTP crystal. Long-term stability, ultra-high brightness (14000 biphotons/s per mW), and MHz signal bandwidth behind a single-mode fiber on the cesium D1 line (894.3 nm) are attained by locking the cavity length of the pump via the Hansch-Couillaud method. The spectral width of the parametric fluorescence is also derived using the signal-to-idler cross-correlation measurements, and has been found to be < 3 MHz.

Narrow-band single photons from a single-resonant optical parametric oscillator far below threshold

M. Scholz, Florian Wolfgramm, Ulrike Herzog +1 more

We present a single-resonant optical parametric oscillator pumped far below threshold as a source for narrow-band single photons. Spontaneous generation of single photons via parametric downconversion is modified and follows the cavity transfer function. Cross-correlation measurements between signal and idler beams show a cavity bandwidth of 62MHz. As the main improvement to prior realizations, our cavity is locked to the pump beam via the Hänsch-Couillaud method and therefore allows the continuous generation of heralded single photons with long-term stability.

Cavity-enhanced narrow bandwidth photon pairs generation at the telecom wavelength with a triple resonance configuration

Zhi‐Yuan Zhou, Dong-Sheng Ding, Yan Li +3 more

In this paper, we present a narrow bandwidth source at the telecom wavelength based on type II PPKTP crystal inside an optical cavity. Simultaneous resonances of the pump and the two down-converted fields are achieved by special design of the cavity. This is a triple resonances optical parametric oscillator (OPO) far below threshold, which generates photon pairs at around 1560 nm with a bandwidth of 8 MHz. A coherence time of 27.7 ns is estimate by a time correlation measurement, and the estimated photon pairs generating rate is 134 s-1MHz-1mW-1. As entangled photon pairs in the telecom regime is suitable for long distance transmission and manipulation, this source is desirable for the demands of quantum communication.

Cavity-enhanced bright photon pairs at telecom wavelengths with a triple-resonance configuration

Zhi‐Yuan Zhou, Dong-Sheng Ding, Yan Li +2 more

We report on the generation of a bright photon source at telecom wavelengths using spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a type II periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal. Simultaneous resonances of the pump and the two down-converted fields are achieved with a properly designed optical cavity. This triple-resonance optical parametric oscillator operates far below threshold, generating photon pairs at 1560 nm wavelength with a bandwidth of 8 MHz. Time correlation measurements produce an estimate of 27.7 ns for the coherence time, and production rate of 134±25 s−1 MHz−1 mW−1 for photon pairs. As photon pairs in the telecom regime are suitable for long-distance transmission, this source may find application in quantum communications.

Bright filter-free source of indistinguishable photon pairs

Florian Wolfgramm, X. Xing, Alessandro Ceré +3 more

We demonstrate a high-brightness source of pairs of indistinguishable photons based on a type-II phase-matched doubly-resonant optical parametric oscillator operated far below threshold. The cavityenhanced down-conversion output of a PPKTP crystal is coupled into two single-mode fibers with a mode coupling efficiency of 58%. The high degree of indistinguishability between the photons of a pair is demonstrated by a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility of higher than 90% without any filtering at an instantaneous coincidence rate of 450,000 pairs/s per mW of pump power per nm of down-conversion bandwidth. For the degenerate spectral mode with a linewidth of 7 MHz at 795 nm a rate of 70 pairs/(s mW MHz) is estimated, increasing the spectral brightness for indistinguishable photons by two orders of magnitude compared to similar previous sources.

Ultrabright, narrow-band photon-pair source for atomic quantum memories

Pin-Ju Tsai, Ying-Cheng Chen

Abstract We demonstrate an ultrabright, narrow-band and frequency-tunable photon-pair source based on cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) which is compatible with atomic transition of rubidium D 2 -line (780 nm) or cesium D 2 -line (852 nm). With the pump beam alternating between a high and a low power phase, the output is switching between the optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and photon-pair generation mode. We utilize the OPO output light to lock the cavity length to maintain the double resonances of signal and idler, as well as to lock the signal frequency to cesium atomic transition. With a type-II phase matching and a double-passed pump scheme such that the cluster frequency spacing is larger than the SPDC bandwidth, the photon-pair output is in a nearly single-mode operation as confirmed by a scanning Fabry–Perot interferometer with its output detected by a photomultiplier. The achieved generation and detection rates are 7.24 × 10 5 and 6142 s −1 mW −1 , respectively. The correlation time of the photon pair is 21.6(2.2) ns, corresponding to a bandwidth of 2 π × 6.6(6) MHz. The spectral brightness is 1.06 × 10 5 s −1 mW −1 MHz −1 . This is a relatively high value under a single-mode operation with the cavity-SPDC scheme. The generated single photons can be readily used in experiments related to atomic quantum memories.

Ultra-bright narrow-band down-conversion source for atom-photon interaction

Florian Wolfgramm, Xingxing Xing, Alessandro Ceré +3 more

There has been increasing interest in the generation of such photon pairs using a spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) source inside an optical cavity to enhance the down-conversion into modes resonant to the cavity, each of the modes having a MHz spectrum. These optical parametric oscillators (OPO) operated far below threshold also provide a well defined spatial mode. Our setup consists of a bow-tie cavity with a periodically poled KTP crystal as nonlinear medium, phase-matched for parametric down-conversion. This photon-pair source is designed to provide photons suitable for interaction with atoms. These photons could be directly used in applications towards a quantum memory of light, like in experiments on slow light or the storage of single photons in EIT media. In this way an optical polarization rotation in an atomic sample could be measured achieving super-resolution.
