Abstract

In this paper, we focus on the physical-layer security of a multiuser cellular downlink system. A multi-antenna base station (BS) communicates with several legitimate users, where a target user is overheard by an eavesdropper in the downlink transmission. We aim at designing linear precoders for the BS to maximize the secrecy rate of target user under the condition that a certain Quality-of- Service (QoS) is guaranteed for the other legitimate users. To solve the non-convex optimization problem, we propose an iterative algorithm to transform the original problem into a sequence of approximate convex problems, which can be solved using interior point method. Simulation results reveal that compared with two other methods dealing with the similar optimization problem in previous works, our proposed method can achieve a higher secrecy rate.

Joint Design of Optimal Cooperative Jamming and Power Allocation for Linear Precoding

Jun Jie Yang, Il‐Min Kim, Dong In Kim

Linear precoding and cooperative jamming for multiuser broadcast channel is studied to enhance the physical layer security. We consider the system where multiple independent data streams are transmitted from the base station to multiple legitimate users with the help of a friendly jammer. It is assumed that a normalized linear precoding matrix is given at the base station, whereas the power allocated to each user is to be determined. The problem is to jointly design the power allocation across different users for linear precoding and the cooperative jamming at the friendly jammer. The goal is to maximize a lower bound of the secrecy rate, provided that a minimum communication rate to the users is guaranteed. The optimal solution is obtained when the number of antennas at the friendly jammer is no less than the total number of antennas at the users and eavesdropper. Moreover, a suboptimal algorithm is proposed, which can be applied for all the scenarios. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed schemes are effective for secure communications.

Secure Transmission via Joint Precoding Optimization for Downlink MISO NOMA

Nan Zhao, Dongdong Li, Mingqian Liu +4 more

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a prospective technology for radio resource constrained future mobile networks. However, NOMA users far from a base station (BS) tend to be more susceptible to eavesdropping because they are allocated more transmit power. In this paper, we aim to jointly optimize the precoding vectors at the BS to ensure the legitimate security in a downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) NOMA network. When the eavesdropping channel state information (CSI) is available at the BS, we can maximize the sum secrecy rate by joint precoding optimization. Owing to its non-convexity, the problem is converted into a convex one, which is solved by a second-order-cone-programming-based iterative algorithm. When the CSI of the eavesdropping channel is not available, we first consider the case that the secure user is not the farthest from the BS, and the transmit power of the farther users is maximized via joint precoding optimization to guarantee its security. Then, we consider the case when the farthest user from the BS requires secure transmission, and the modified successive interference cancellation order and joint precoding optimization can be adopted to ensure its security. A similar method can be exploited to solve the two non-convex problems when the CSI is unknown. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed schemes can improve the security performance for MISO NOMA systems effectively, with and without eavesdropping CSI.

Achieving Covertness and Security in Broadcast Channels With Finite Blocklength

Chao Wang, Zan Li, Haibin Zhang +2 more

Considering multi-user downlink ultra-high reliability and low latency communications (URLLC), this paper employs the artificial noise (AN) technique to establish a secure and covert broadcast communication paradigm for the first time. Specifically, a multi-antenna transmitter (Alice) broadcasts the confidential information to multiple legitimate users in the presence of a multi-antenna malicious warden (Willie) and a multi-antenna eavesdropper (Eve). It is well known that AN is an effective technique for securing the physical layer security (PLS) of signal transmissions. Nevertheless, AN emission also exposes the signal transmission and decreases the signal covertness. Taking into account the impact of short-packet URLLC transmissions, we investigate the joint optimization of the precoder and AN to maximize the secrecy rate under the covertness constraint. Although the considered problem is nonconvex, we propose a branch-reduce-and-bound (BRB)-based algorithm to solve it optimally. However, the nested-loop structure of the BRB-based algorithm incurs a high computational complexity. To strike a balance between the performance and computational complexity, we also propose a low-complexity penalty successive convex approximation (SCA)-based algorithm, whose performance approaches that of the optimal BRB-based algorithm, particularly in the low to medium transmit power regime. Simulation results demonstrate the excellent performance of our proposed optimization algorithms compared with various benchmark algorithms and unveil the importance of exploiting AN for secrecy provisioning.

Multiuser MIMO Concept for Physical Layer Security in Multibeam Satellite Systems

Matthias G. Schraml, Robert T. Schwarz, Andreas Knopp

In satellite communication downlinks, physical layer security is challenging to achieve due to their broadcasting nature and Line-of-Sight channel characteristics. This paper provides a precoding algorithm to secure the downlinks of multiple users against multiple eavesdroppers with optimization of the minimum secrecy capacity. By the use of artificial noise, a positive secrecy capacity is achievable even if the number of eavesdroppers is higher than the number of beams. We demonstrate that a multiple-reflector antenna design provides a significantly higher secrecy and throughput performance when compared to a single-reflector design due to additional degrees of freedom, exhibited by the signal phases. The total vulnerability region is introduced as a new figure of merit with respect to unidentified eavesdroppers.

Secure transmission for multi-antenna two-way relay cellular networks with no eavesdropper's CSI

Jae‐Hwan Lee, Jae‐Mo Kang, Hyung-Myung Kim

In this paper, we investigate the security of a multi-antenna two-way relay cellular network in the presence of a passive eavesdropper, where a base station and multiple mobile users exchange uplink and downlink information with the assistance of a relay station. We propose a secrecy scheme based on the concepts of the artificial noise scheme for the secure transmission and signal alignment scheme for the suppression of multiuser interference. This paper aims to study transceiver design to minimize the transmit power allocated to the information signal so that the transmit power allocated to the artificial noise signal can be maximized to confuse the eavesdropper, under the constraints of quality of service requirement. We show that transceiver design problems can be converted to a second-order cone programming problem and the optimal solution is obtained efficiently. The performance of the proposed secrecy scheme is evaluated by simulations.
