Abstract

In the last ten years lasers containing saturable absorber are considered widely theoretically and experimentally by many authors/1-4/, Un action of this laser containing saturable absorber (LSA) are shown different interseting effects like the optical bistability, the bifurrcation, the chaos regime etc...

Optical bistability of Fabry-Perot LSA with inhomogeneous broadening

Dinh Van Hoang, Phung Quoc Bao

The optical bistability (OB) behavior of single-mode Fabry- Perot lasers containing saturable absorber (LSA) is presented on the basis of the rate equations with allowance for spontaneous emission and spatial hole-burning. Special attention is paid to the case of dominant inhomogeneous broadening in both Lorentzian and Gaussian models. The OB occurrence conditions are clearly displayed in phase diagrams. The influence of the main LSA parameters on OB characteristics as well as on OB curves' stability are investigated in detail. Some practical suggestions for optimizing the bistable operation in LSA are also given.

Influence of the "hole burning" effect on the optical bistability in lasers containing a saturable absorber

Dinh Van Hoang, Vo Thanh Lam

An analysis is made of the influence of the "hole burning" effect on the optical bistability during operation of lasers containing a saturable absorber in the resonator. The rate equation approximation is used to examine single-mode and multimode lasing. The results obtained show that under certain conditions not only the bistability, but also multistable states can appear.

OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN A TRIMODALE LASER CONTAINING A SATURABLE ABSORBER

S. Djabi, H. Boudoukha, M. Djabi

A simple mathematical model to describe the action of a saturable absorber in a laser cavity (LSA) was developed. The approach considered here takes in a phenomenological way into account the essential physical processes which makes it possible to determine the principal parameters in a LSA and their influences on the optical bistability. We will study theoretically optical bistability in a trimodale laser containing a saturable absorber in the case that the active medium and absorber show a homogeneous broadening. We determine the densities of photons as function of the pumping of the active medium and analyze the linear stability of the solutions obtained.

Analytic Studies of the Laser With a Saturable Absorber

Thomas Erneux

In the laser with a saturable absorber (LSA), the spontaneous and stimulated emissions build up in the laser cavity but are restrained by the intracavity absorber. As a result, two new modes of operation are observed: optical bistability and time-periodic intensity pulses. These two behaviors are not observed in the usual laser under normal conditions. Thus, the LSA is an example of an active system displaying optical bistability. (See Ref. 1 for a general review).

Transient Bistability in a Laser Containing a Saturable Absorber

E. Arimondo, C. Gabbanini, E. Menchi +2 more

The question of the behaviour of the LSA when a control parameter is a slowly varying function of time, has recently been raised [1]. The investigation of the transient behaviour of a LSA is interesting not only in connection with the problem of the response time of optically bistable systems but also because in any real experiment, if one wants to explore a phase diagram, the parameters have to be changed in time. Although the relaxation times of the molecular medium and the cavity response time are of the order of 100μs or smaller, the time constants characterising the transient regime of the LSA may be much longer because of the critical slowing down which appears near the limit points of the hysteresis cycle[2]
