SECOND-ORDER QUANTUM COHERENCE AND IT'S TIME-SPECTRUM CHARACTERISTICS IN THE FIELD OF A TWO-MODE LASER

Yin J, Y Wang

According to the quantum theory of coherence, we have derived the degree of second-order coherence, g(2) (τ), and the formula of it's time-spectrum in a two-mode laser, and given the results under three specific cases. The second-order coherence and it's time-spectrum characteristics of a two-mode laser isanalysed, the periodicity and the photon anticorrelation effect of g(2)(τ) are indicated, and the possible application of the time-spectrum characteristics of g(2)(τ) in a two-mode He-Ne laser is discussed.

Coherence and Statistical Properties of a Two-Mode Laser Beam

The first- and second-order correlation functions for the field obtained by the superposition of two laser modes through a Young's experiment are discussed both experimentally and theoretically. An electronic method we have developed for measuring certain values of the second-order correlation is contrasted with the method based on photon counting. It is shown that, in some cases, interference experiments may have advantages over the photocounting technique.

MEASUREMENTS OF PHOTON CORRELATIONS OF SECOND HARMONIC GENERATED LIGHT

F. Davidson, J. Klebba, C. L. Laurence +1 more

Results of measurements of the second-order intensity correlation function of the optical field produced by cw optical second harmonic generation in a LiNbO3 crystal pumped by a He–Ne laser operating in two independent axial modes are reported. The observed correlation function is shown to be in agreement with theoretical descriptions of second harmonic generation and with coherence theory.

Two-Photon Correlations in a Mixture of Gaussian and Laser Light

G. Present, D. B. Scarl

Measurement of the two-photon time distribution in a mixture of light from a He-Ne laser and a Gaussian source of the same central frequency agrees well with the prediction of coherence theory when the laser is represented by a single coherent state. The peak in the distribution near zero time difference is made up of contributions due to the second-order interference between pairs of Gaussian photons and between laser and Gaussian photons.
