Abstract

By using the normal-ordering technique in the coherent state representation,we discuss the dynamical evolution of the coherence of a Schrodinger cat state in a high Q cavity coupled to another resonator in the presence of external fields.During the progression of the coherence,we pay particular attention to the effect of the external fields,as well as to the initial phase of the Schrodinger cat state.

Reversible Decoherence of a Mesoscopic Superposition of Field States

J. M. Raimond, M. Brune, S. Haroche

We describe the blueprint of an experiment in which the decoherence of a mesoscopic superposition of radiation states (``Schr\"odinger cat'') becomes a reversible process. When the high $Q$ cavity containing the Schr\"odinger cat is coupled to another resonator, the mesoscopic quantum coherence first decays rapidly, then exhibits sharp revivals with the period of the energy exchange between the two cavities. The interpretation of this experiment emphasizes the link between decoherence and complementarity and leads to an illuminating quantitative interpretation of the usual irreversible decoherence phenomenon.

Dynamics of Optically Driven Exciton and Quantum Decoherence

Jin Guang-Ri, Liu Yuxi, Duan-Lu Zhou +1 more

By using the normal ordering method, we study the state evolution of an optically driven excitons in a quantum well immersed in a leaky cavity, which was introduced by Yu-Xi Liu et al. [Phys. Rev. A 63 (2001) 033816]. The influence of the external laser field on the quantum decoherence of a mesoscopically superposed state of the excitons is investigated. Our result shows that, the classical field can compensate the energy dissipation of the excitons. Although the decoherence rate of the excitonic Schrödinger cat state does not depend on the external field, the phase of the decoherence factor can be well controlled by adjusting the amplitude of the external field as well as the detuning between the field and the transition frequency of the atom.

An experimental study of a schrödinger cat decoherence with atoms and cavities

X. Ma[icaron]tre, E. W. Hagley, J. Dreyer +5 more

The dynamics of quantum decoherence have been experimentally studied for the first time. A single circular Rydberg atom prepares in a high-quality superconducting cavity a ‚Schrödinger cat‘ state of the radiation field. This highly non-classical state is a quantum superposition of two coherent components with different classical phases. A second atom probes the cavity state after a tunable delay. The decay of the quantum correlations between the two atoms reveals the evolution of the initial quantum superposition into a mere statistical mixture. The time scale of this process decreases when the separation beween the two components increases. A simple theoretical model of the experiment is presented. The excellent agreement with the experimental signals confirms in a striking way the decoherence approach.
