Implementation of one-dimensional quantum walks on spin-orbital angular momentum space of photons

Pei Zhang, Bi‐Heng Liu, Ruifeng Liu +3 more

Photons can carry spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM), which can be used to realize a qubit system and a high-dimension system, respectively. This spin-orbital system is very suitable for implementing one-dimensional discrete-time quantum random walks. We propose a simple scheme of quantum walks on the spin-orbital angular momentum space of photons, where photons walk on the infinite OAM space controlled by their SAM. By employing the recent invention of an optical device, the so-called ``$q$-plate,'' our scheme is more simple and efficient than others because there is no Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the scheme.

Spin and orbital angular momentum correlations in parametric downconversion of Bessel beams

C. L. Hernández-Cedillo, Rocío Jáuregui

We present a full vectorial analysis of the parametric downconversion process using a pump Bessel beam and a photon description based on Bessel wavefunctions. We find that, under the considered geometry, optical angular momentum is conserved but the crystal induces a coupling between the optical spin angular momentum (SAM) and the optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) ruled by the nonlinear properties of the crystal via the second order susceptibility tensor ?ijk(2). This leads to nontrivial correlations between the expected values of the SAM and OAM of the resulting two-photon states. Distributions of orbital angular momentum of the downconverted photons are evaluated in detail for a specific set-up.

Dynamics analysis of nanoparticles optically driven by a Laguerre-Gaussian beam with optical spin

Mamoru Tamura, Takashige Omatsu, Takuya Iida

Abstract We theoretically discover that the spin angular momentum (SAM) enables to modulate the orbital torque through the inter-particle light-induced force (IP-LIF). Laguerre - Gaussian beam with the orbital angular momentum (OAM) can induce the orbital motion for the optically trapped objects. In addition, the SAM can also accelerate or decelerate the orbital motion due to the IP-LIF. Our discovery provides a new physical aspect, i.e. the IP-LIF plays an important role in the many-body dynamics of nanoparticles via the SAM-OAM coupling.
