Raman solitons in homogeneously and inhomogeously broadened media

Abstract

We discuss the effects of coherence decay on the stability of Raman solitons using analytical and numerical methods. Solitons are found to decay for detuning from Raman resonance as small as a few percent of the line width. Solitons are more stable in inhomogeneously broadened media than for homogeneous broadening.

Raman solitons and self-phase modulation

R. Wolfson, Kai J. Drühl

Homogeneous broadening leads to the decay of Raman solitons,1,2 if pump and Stokes are not exactly on Raman resonance. This is due to a dispersive frequency shift at the soliton center. Media with strong self-phase modulation (SPM) can balance this dispersive effect and even show an amplification of peak pump intensity. In this case, the net decrease in pump power is compensated by narrowing from SPM. We present analytical and numerical results, which demonstrate this effect for media with strong Stark shift.

Raman solitons in media with a Stark shift: soliton regeneration through self-phase modulation

R. Wolfson, Kai J. Drühl

An internal phase-shift mechanism can lead to the amplification of Raman solitons even in the presence of coherence decay and detuning. We study here the case of a Raman medium with strong ac Stark shift by using both analytical and numerical methods. Our results also suggest the possibility of propagating stable transient Raman solitons in optical fibers.

Effects of medium saturation on the propagation of Raman solitons

Christian J. Tourenne, Kai J. Drühl

Propagation of Raman solitons in a homogeneously broadened medium is studied for the case where appreciable medium saturation occurs. We use the differential conservation law for energy to obtain an equation for the temporal soliton width. In the limit of small width earlier results are reproduced, while for large width a linear decrease of width with gain is predicted. Numerical calculations give excellent agreement with our analytical results.

TRANSFORM RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ABSORPTION AND RESONANCE RAMAN SCATTERING IN INHOMOGENEOUS MEDIA

Imbi Tehver

A relationship between the absorption spectrum and the corresponding Raman excitation spectrum of molecules/impurity centers in inhomogeneous media has been derived for the case when the inhomogeneous broadening is smaller than the homogeneous one. This is a generalization of the basic transform relationship found earlier for an ensemble of identical molecules.1.
