Abstract

The photoinduced absorption in Bi 12 TiO 20 crystals is considered based on a model of two long-lived levels. Methods to
control this effect and the ways of its application are presented. New possibilities for the realization of an optical
memory system based on this effect are demonstrated.

Summary form only given. We present experimental results on the interferometric analysis of the photoinduced phase changes produced by a 1D dark stripe and a 2D dark circular spot intensity distributions. These kind of intensity distributions are typical for dark spatial soliton generation.

In the present contribution we investigate the dynamics of a system showing the nonlinearity of photoinduced absorption under LIG [1] excitation. The experimental realisation is obtained in CdS where plasma induced effects lead to a red shift of absorption and to optical bistability [2].

Radiative processes in a bichromatic laser field with multiple frequencies

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

A review of experimental and theoretical studies on radiative processes induced by a bichromatic (two-frequency) laser radiation in atoms, molecules, and solids is presented. The optical excitation of matter is considered at transitions of different types: bound—bound, bound—free, and free—free. A special attention is devoted to the possibility of the coherent control of the basic characteristics of radiative phenomena by varying the relative phase of monochromatic components of radiation. It is shown that this method opens up new possibilities for controlling photoinduced processes.

Coherent interference effects and squeezed light generation in optomechanical systems

Kenan Qu

My Ph.D dissertation is on the fundamental effects in optomechanical systems (OMS) and their important applications. The OMS are based on the possibility of the mechanical motion produced by few photons incident on the mechanical device. This dissertation presents several applications of the OMS in the area of storage of light in long-lived phonons, single mode optomechanical Ramsey interferometry, and generation of large amount of squeezing in the output radiation. The long-lived phonons can be monitored and controlled via optical means as was experimentally demonstrated. To show this, I develop the theory of transient electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). For further applications like state transfer, especially over very different frequency regimes, I consider double-cavity OMS, where the two cavities can correspond to different spectral domains, yet the state transfer is possible via phonons. The state transfer is based on a new effect, electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA), where one uses a second control field from the other cavity to produce an absorption peak inside the EIT window. All these involve the interference of various path ways via which a final state is reached. The following chapter shows how Fano-like interference can arise in OMS. A Fano asymmetry parameter for OMS was defined.
