Transit times of radiation through photonic bandgap materials: Pulse reshaping of classical and quantum fields in the time domain

Martin Ligare, Aaron Gee-Clough, Charles Doersam

We study the propagation of electromagnetic pulses through photonic bandgap materials and relate time-domain pulse reshaping to observable transit times. For layered dielectric mirrors we demonstrate how pulse reshaping of slowly varying classical fields results in transit-time delays that are equivalent to the group delay. The time-domain analysis emphasizes the causal origin of negative group delays. We also study an analogous fully-quantized model and show how the same time-domain analysis may be used to interpret observed delays of single-photon fields.

Kinetics of two-pulsed photon echo formed on the 0–1 transition: isotropic and anisotropic collisions

Гольдорт Вениамин Гершевич, В. Н. Ищенко, Хворостов Евгений Борисович +2 more

Abstract The photon echo formed at the intercombination (6s 2 ) 1 S 0 (6s6p) 3 P 1 (type 0–1) transition of ytterbium atoms 174 Yb by two pulses of resonance radiation was investigated as a function of the time delay between exciting pulses (the photon echo kinetics). For exciting radiation pulses of the same linear polarization in the delay region 70–250 ns, the photon echo kinetics is close to the exponential one both in pure ytterbium and in its mixtures with buffer gases Ar and Xe. The relaxation cross sections were determined for all three cases, taking into account the isotopic composition of xenon and ytterbium. For the first time, the complex nonmonotonous kinetics of the collision-induced photon echo was observed in the same mixtures for the forming pulses of linear mutually orthogonal polarization. The relative efficiency of buffer atoms Yb (other isotopes than 174 Yb), Xe and Ar in the collision-induced photon echo formation was obtained.

Theory of deep ultraviolet generation at maximum coherence assisted by Stark-chirped two-photon resonance

S. A. Myslivets, A. K. Popov, Victor Kimberg +1 more

A scheme is analyzed for effcient generation of vacuum ultraviolet radiation through four-wave mixing processes assisted by the technique of Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage. These opportunities are associated with pulse excitation of laddertype short-wavelength two-photon atomic or molecular transitions so that relaxation processes can be neglected. In this three-laser technique, a delayed-pulse of strong oR-resonant infrared radiation sweeps the laser-induced Stark-shift of a two-photon transition in a such way that facilitates robust maximum two-photon coherence induced by the first ultraviolet laser. A judiciously delayed third pulse scatters at this coherence and generates short-wavelength radiation. A theoretical analysis of these problems based on the density matrix is performed. A numerical model is developed to carry out simulations of a typical experiment. The results illustrate a behavior of populations, coherence and generated radiation along the medium as well as opportunities of effcient generation of deep (vacuum) ultraviolet radiation.
