Observation of coherent excitation processes in e -H collisions

A. H. Mahan, Stephen J. Smith

In a measurement of emission of Balmer-$\ensuremath{\alpha}$ flux from atomic hydrogen or deuterium excited by electron impact in a crossed-beam experiment, a longitudinal electric field which enhances the Balmer-$\ensuremath{\alpha}$ flux by Stark-mixing components of like ${M}_{J}$ within the $n=3$ shell, does so asymmetrically depending on whether the field is applied parallel or antiparallel to the electron beam. The effect is attributed to coherent excitation of states of opposite parity.

Coherent Electron Impact Excitation of Atoms

D Cvejanović, Albert Crowe, Derek Brown

Experimental studies of electron impact excitation, of atoms with closed ns shells are discussed in terms of electron impact coherence parameters, EICPs. Experimental and theoretical data leading to full determination of complex scattering amplitudes for the S-D excitation in helium and S-P in alkaline earth atoms are presented. Similarities and differences in the angular behaviour of EICPs within the alkaline earth group are discussed and compared with helium. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
