Non-Markovian and Markovian Dynamics of a V-type Three-Level Atom

Abstract

The reduced dynamics of a V-type three-level atom in a structure reservoir is presented, which has the exact solution in certain special condition. The Markovian and non-Markovian master equations for this composite system are solved and compared with the exact solution. The solving approach can be directly generalized to the solution of a V-type multilevel system dynamics interacting with a reservoir. The results further testify that these two kinds of master equations are exploited in different coupling regime, providing guidance for further application of these variants master equations to solve multilevel system dynamics without the exact solution.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit in a reservoir: different solutions of non-Markovian master equation

Bang-Fu Ding, Xiao-Yun Wang, Yan-Fang Tang +2 more

We present a non-Markovian master equation for a qubit interacting with a general reservoir, which is derived according to the Nakajima—Zwanzig and the time convolutionless projection operator technique. The non-Markovian solutions and Markovian solution of dynamical decay of a qubit are compared. The results indicate the validity of non-Markovian approach in different coupling regimes and also show that the Markovian master equation may not precisely describe the dynamics of an open quantum system in some situation. The non-Markovian solutions may be effective for many qubits independently interacting with the heated reservoirs.

Quantum Master Equations for Composite Systems: Is Born–Markov Approximation Really Valid?

Masatoshi Nakatani, Tetsuo Ogawa

Markovian quantum master equations are generally thought to satisfy the following three conditions: (i) they describe the dynamics of time scales that are larger than the reservoir correlation time scale, (ii) these stationary solutions give the thermal equilibrium states with a reservoir, and (iii) they can be written in the Lindblad form. In fact, for single systems such as a single harmonic oscillator and a single two-level system, Markovian quantum master equations satisfying all these conditions can be obtained. However, for composite systems, which consist of more than one subsystem coupled with each other, such equations have not been obtained thus far. In this study, we found that we cannot use the Born–Markov approximation for obtaining quantum master equations for composite systems in the strong-coupling regime, no matter how short the reservoir correlation time is.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a three-level Λ-atom coupled to a structured reservoir: comparison between the weak and strong coupling regimes

Xing Mao Xiao, Mao-Fa Fang, Yan-Ling Li

The dynamics of a three-level Λ-atom coupled to a structured reservoir has been investigated. Comparing the Lorentzian time-dependent decay rate and population dynamics for the weak coupling regime with those for the strong coupling regime, we note that non-Markovian features exist in both regimes, but population dynamics shows fairly different behaviors. Moreover, the different positions of the two transition frequencies with respect to the structured reservoir reduces the influence of non-Markovian effects on population dynamics. Based on the non-Markovianity, we give an intuitive interpretation of the result that the non-Markovian effects have little influence on population dynamics in the weak coupling regime, but have an obvious influence in the strong coupling regime.

Theory of non-Markovian decay of a cascade atom in high-Q cavities and photonic band gap materials

B M Garraway, Bryan J. Dalton

The dynamics of a three-level atom in a cascade configuration with both transitions coupled to a single structured reservoir of quantized field modes is treated using Laplace transform methods applied to the coupled amplitude equations. Results are also obtained from master equations by two different approaches, that is, involving either pseudomodes or quasimodes. Two different types of reservoir are considered, namely a high-Q cavity and a photonic band-gap system, in which the respective reservoir structure functions involve Lorentzians. Non-resonant transitions are included in the model. In all cases non-Markovian behaviour for the atomic system can be found, such as oscillatory decay for the high-Q cavity case and population trapping for the photonic band-gap case. In the master equation approaches, the atomic system is augmented by a small number of pseudomodes or quasimodes, which in the quasimode approach themselves undergo Markovian relaxation into a flat reservoir of continuum quasimodes. Results from these methods are found to be identical to those from the Laplace transform method including two-photon excitation of the reservoir with both emitting sequences. This shows that complicated non-Markovian decays of an atomic system into structured EM field reservoirs can be described by Markovian models for the atomic system coupled to a small number of pseudomodes or quasimodes.

Non-Markovian quantum interference in multilevel quantum systems: Exact master equation approach

Yusui Chen, J. Q. You, Ting Yu

We study the non-Markovian quantum interference phenomenon of a multi-state atomic system coupled to a bosonic dissipative environment by using the exact master equations derived in this paper. Two examples involving four-level systems with or without external control fields are investigated. Our results show that non-Markovian master equations are capable of exhibiting quantum interference phenomena in a temporal domain that has not fully explored before. In particular, we show that the environmental memory is instrumental in the onset of non-Markovian quantum interference pattern in different time scales.
