Abstract

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum-Atom Optics investigates the quantum nature of multiple particle states of atoms and photons. It combines pre-eminent theoretical and experimental research groups in quantum and atom optics at the Australian National University, the University of Queensland and the Swinburne University of Technology.

Introduction

Daniel F. Walls

The Workshop on Atom Optics was held at the University of Adelaide in September 1995. It was attended by pproximately 40 physicists from Australia and New Zealand. The venue for the workshop was the new Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Adelaide which provided excellent facilities for lectures and discussion. Atom optics is a field which has grown rapidly since its beginning approximately five years ago. There are now several groups in Australia and New Zealand pursuing research activities in both theoretical and experimental aspects of atom optics.

Quantum computing: Silicon enters the quantum-bit race

Peter Pockley

Researchers in Australia have boldly declared that they will produce a prototype building block for the world's first quantum computer within 12 months. Quantum computers would exploit the ability of a particle to be in two quantum states at the same time, allowing them, in principle, to outperform classical computers by many orders of magnitude in some operations. Staff at the Australian Centre for Quantum Computing Technology say that a device based on two quantum bits, or “qubits”, will be ready within a year. While groups in other countries are pursing different strategies, the Australian scientists are basing their research on silicon chips, which, they say, have the advantage of already being widely used in industry.

Quantum Atom Optics

Tim Byrnes, Ebubechukwu O. Ilo-Okeke

The rapid development of quantum technologies has driven a revolution in related research areas such as quantum computation and communication, and quantum materials. The first prototypes of functional quantum devices are beginning to appear, frequently created using ensembles of atoms, which allow the observation of sensitive, quantum effects, and have important applications in quantum simulation and matter wave interferometry. This modern text offers a self-contained introduction to the fundamentals of quantum atom optics and atomic many-body matter wave systems. Assuming a familiarity with undergraduate quantum mechanics, this book will be accessible for graduate students and early career researchers moving into this important new field. A detailed description of the underlying theory of quantum atom optics is given, before development of the key, quantum, technological applications, such as atom interferometry, quantum simulation, quantum metrology, and quantum computing.
