Abstract

The use of R\'enyi entropy as an uncertainty measure alternative to variance leads to the study of states with quantum fluctuations below the levels established by Gaussian states, which are the position-momentum minimum uncertainty states according to variance. We examine the quantum properties of states with exponential wave functions, which combine reduced fluctuations with practical feasibility.

Information entropy and squeezing of quantum fluctuations

Arkadiusz Orłowski

Quantum-mechanical entropies of position and momentum operators in a given state are shown to be reasonable and sensitive measures for squeezing of quantum fluctuations. It is shown to be true not only for states having Gaussian wave functions but also for more general, both pure and mixed, quantum states. A simple proof that the squeezing exhibited by the variance is always accompanied by a corresponding entropy reduction below the entropy vacuum level is given. These results show that the information entropy is not only a theoretically satisfactory concept but can also be useful as a tool for more practical quantum-optics applications.

Signatures of quantum fluctuations in the Dicke model by means of Rényi uncertainty

Manuel Calixto, Á. Nagy, I. Paradela +1 more

R\'enyi uncertainty relations are shown to have significant importance in quantum phase transitions. They detect the quantum phase transition in the Dicke model. The R\'enyi entropy sum is more appropriate for describing quantum fluctuations than the standard variance products.

Some entropic extensions of the uncertainty principle

Steeve Zozor, M. Portesi, Christophe Vignat

In connection with the uncertainty principle in quantum mechanics (Heisenberg) or in time-frequency analysis (Heisenberg-Gabor), we study its formulation in terms of entropic inequalities, extending results recently derived by Bialynicki-Birula [1] and Zozor et al. [2]. These results can be considered as generalizations of the Heisenberg inequalities in the sense that they measure the mutual uncertainty of a random variable (or wave function) and its conjugated random variable (or Fourier transformed wave function) through their associated Rényi entropies with conjugated indexes. We consider here the more general case where the entropic indexes are not conjugated, in both cases where the state space is discrete and continuous: we discuss the existence of an uncertainty inequality depending on the location of the entropic indexes α and β in the plane (α, β). Our results explain and extend a recent study by Luis [3], where states with quantum fluctuations below the Gaussian case are discussed at the single point (2, 2).

Quantum Uncertainty and Entropy

Giovanni Chesi, Lorenzo Maccone

We review the plethora of uncertainty relations that appear in quantum mechanics and their nuances. We present both foundational applications, e.g. in understanding and defining complementarity, and practical applications, e.g. in quantum metrology and cryptography. Both variance- and entropy-based uncertainties are covered here.

Formulation of the uncertainty relations in terms of the Rényi entropies

Iwo Białynicki‐Birula

Quantum-mechanical uncertainty relations for position and momentum are expressed in the form of inequalities involving the R\'enyi entropies. The proof of these inequalities requires the use of the exact expression for the $(p,q)$-norm of the Fourier transformation derived by Babenko and Beckner. Analogous uncertainty relations are derived for angle and angular momentum and also for a pair of complementary observables in $N$-level systems. All these uncertainty relations become more attractive when expressed in terms of the symmetrized R\'enyi entropies.

Position-momentum uncertainty relations in the presence of quantum memory

Fabian Furrer, Mario Berta, Marco Tomamichel +2 more

A prominent formulation of the uncertainty principle identifies the fundamental quantum feature that no particle may be prepared with certain outcomes for both position and momentum measurements. Often the statistical uncertainties are thereby measured in terms of entropies providing a clear operational interpretation in information theory and cryptography. Recently, entropic uncertainty relations have been used to show that the uncertainty can be reduced in the presence of entanglement and to prove security of quantum cryptographic tasks. However, much of this recent progress has been focused on observables with only a finite number of outcomes not including Heisenberg’s original setting of position and momentum observables. Here, we show entropic uncertainty relations for general observables with discrete but infinite or continuous spectrum that take into account the power of an entangled observer. As an illustration, we evaluate the uncertainty relations for position and momentum measurements, which is operationally significant in that it implies security of a quantum key distribution scheme based on homodyne detection of squeezed Gaussian states.
